Eureka Lemons falling from tree

by Karen/NoCA » Sat Sep 13, 2008 2:37 pm

We have another great crop of lemons this year. We've had about 5 partially ripe lemons (small ones) fall from the tree. After cutting them open I found them to be dried up inside. The rest of the lemons are still green and growing. Does anyone know what might have caused this. I could not find any info doing a Google search.
The tree is on a regular fertilizer program and gets plenty of water. It was purchased as a dwarf tree but is 15 ft. tall and spreading to about ten feet.

My dwarf Meyer lemon has been freaky for two years. Last year, no flowers. This year, flowers but all the little lemonheads fell off. Prior to this, I had had great harvests.
And now what?

My Meyer lemon has been acting like yours, Gary. I had to cut it back, too; it looked like it was straining from too much water, which we had a lot of this year.

Might the dried up ones have been leftovers from last year's lemons?

The Meyer lemon bush in front of Dad's house had a couple of stressful years, but this last spring it produced a bumper crop -- lemons as large as medium sized oranges. Oddly, the Eureka lemon tree in the back yard didn't do as well. It has lots of lemons but they're small and not terribly juicy. Sweet and tasty, though, just a bit more work to make a pie.

The current Meyer bush was planted in 1992 after the previous one died in the "Great Freeze of '91". The Eureka tree is old - I think it was planted in the mid-1950s.

Was there really someone on this forum who went by that name?

I've tried for information to figure out what's going on with my Meyer lemon, but the information is conflicting.

It's now my opinion that it may be the soil I used. But I do wish I could find a real Lemon Man to help me out, especially since my wife bought me a lime tree for my birthday this summer, and now I have to figure that one out, too!

Finicky things--citrus.

Eureka Lemons? Is this another over-engineered product from the folks at http://www.madeineureka.com?

In response to the OP, in my experience this is just something lemons do - they set more fruit than they "decide" they can ripen and some fruit dries up and falls off. Of course, it's disappointing to lose potential lemons but my guess is there's nothing you're doing wrong or need to worry about.

Premature fruit drop has been a real problem this season in all of our commercial groves ... the Eureka's are the worst but we are also seeing the same thing to a lessor extent on the Lisbon's ... lemon trees have multiple blooms on them that ultimately produce fruit and it doesn't seem to be happening on one particular bloom, rather on random big (oldest bloom), medium (normal heaviest bloom), and small (late bloom) fruit ... the other thing we're seeing is a higher percentage of the fruit on the tree that is breaking color - showing more yellow to light yellow color on a portion of the skin of each lemon ... WAY too early to be seeing this kind of color ... as to the why ... me, my farm managers, and even our old timer growers are just scratching their heads ... the Eureka variety has a tendency to either drop it's earliest bloom fruit and allow it to remain on the tree but dry inside ... that's why this area is 95 percent Lisbons and only about 5 percent Eurekas ... we also have two small groves of Meyer lemons and same here - some drop although no dry fruit ... personally I think the early hot spell we had the third week of May and again the second week of June is mostly responsible ... the fruit was at a critical time in their growing stage and just couldn't take the temperatures ... I am concerned that the hot May and hot early and mid June may cause this to be a weak lemon crop that will ultimately lead to premature shelf-life problems down the road ... wish I could be of more help but 36 years in this business is just 1 year's experience 36 years in a row !

Bill, I was hoping you would come around...you always seem to nail it and this explination makes sense. Our fruit is still green but the lemons that did yellow are the ones that have dropped. Last year we had the most beautiful large lemons I have ever seen in my life. Full of juice and hardley any seeds....why no seeds?
I loved them and had so many things lemon going on in my kitchen - it was wonderful. Not to mention buckets of lemons for months.
Thanks for your comments, I really appreciate the time you take to help us lemon lovers! One thing - I miss your posts and especially your lemon recipes. You must be very busy...but check back in now and then with a yummy recipe to share with us all.
