I'm in the middle of an Alaska vacation & once again I am reminded of what good fish should taste/feel like. The salmon and halibut I have had over the last several days makes me never want to eat fish at home again.

This happened when I came up here in 2005. It was close to a year before I could enjoy fish again (sort of) because the flavors were too "fishy" and the texture too mushy at home compared to the really fresh stuff up in Alaska.

Yep, eating what is grown/raised/sourced locally is usually a good idea.

Will you be doing any moose hunting while in Alaska? :wink:

No moose hunting, but we have enjoyed the fruits of such/similar hunts at many breakfasts. We've had bear sausage, moose bacon & today it's caribou sausage. Yummy plus low fat!!

I had a crazy experience in Seward, Alaska, which is a fishing port, a couple of years ago. We were staying in a condo with a cute little kitchen rather than a hotel room, so I thought, "I'll go buy some fresh local fish at the docks or in town and cook dinner."

Well, there was NO LOCAL FRESH FISH to be bought. There was tons of fish coming in from the docks, but it all belonged to sport fishermen. Commercial fisherman froze their fish at sea, and nobody sold fresh fish locally, because all the locals just fished for themselves and us tourists were supposed to eat at restaurants.

I finally found a store selling plastic-sealed packages of what they said was fresh halibut, but it was mushy and watery when I opened the package. I'm sure it had been defrosted.
