Anyone use extra virgin coconut oil?

by Jenise » Sun Sep 07, 2008 1:39 pm

Someone gave me a jar yesterday. (Yes jar, wide-mouthed, not bottle. It looks like library paste.) I've never used it before. Tips? Cautions?

You could make your own tanning lotion.

LOL, Robert. You know what, I love coconut. Fresh, or canned as a milk for use in Thai foods, but I detest, absolutely detest, the coconut smell of commercial tanning products. Which is why I'm afraid to open that jar....

Is it supposed to have less saturated fat than regular coconut oil? We stay away from the regular for that reason, using peanut oil in SE Asian recipes.

Here's a couple other links on coconut oil that will add 'fuel' to the fire!
Saturated fats are still a 'hot button' issue and appear to be in that category of subjects that gather supporters or opponents depending on what was read last.
So bad for you or not appears to rely on which axe one has to grind and perhaps like many other controversial issues, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. I do believe that this subject has not been fully researched and so guess will continue to observe moderation until there's some definitive knowledge presented.
In the meantime, here's those links.

Jenise,

How is extra virgin coconut oil made? I suspect you could get the same thing by removing the water from coconut cream (the thick layer of coconut oil that appears on the top of coconut milk).

Carl,

Extra virgin coconut oil is going to just be nearly 100% coconut oil, and as such will be nearly all saturated fat. That is why it is semi-solid at room temperature.

Maybe it's a good alternative to KY jelly.

Want to try it? I'll send this jar to you if you'll report on its effectiveness. :)
