chiles and radiation

Jalapenos and serrano chiles have just been deemed safe by the FDA. Yea! Now there's talk of irradiating a number of vegetables to prevent future salmonelli or e. coli outbreaks. Your thoughts on irradiation?

It's better than E. coli.

And salmonella.

I'm all for it. I particularly enjoy irradiation by sunlight, but I'm also partial to irradiating my bread with infrared (never my bagels, though). Now, what was the question again?

If not, then I say go ahead. If, OTOH, it can be demonstrated that the food is somehow noticeably changed, then put on the brakes.

The Precautionary Principle ain't necessarily a bad thing.

Last year I started growing my own lettuces and spinach. I'm adding swiss chard and New Zealand spinach this year. Grew my jalapeños this year too....they freeze great and I have them all winter.
All the leafy things grow easily in a barrel on a sunny patio or porch.....look pretty too.

I have no problems with eating irradiated food. I also favor nuclear power as the best way to cut our petroleum dependency.

John, I've read that certain vegetables, but not all, might have their texture changed. Meat is already frequently irradiated.
