Now I know why I've never had truffles

by Howie Hart » Sun Apr 20, 2008 5:24 am

Earlier today (last night actually), while shopping at the local Wegman's, I noticed imported French black truffles in the mushroom section. About a dozen were in a locked case. They were priced at $999.99/lb. :o :o

If it's not December, they're old, fake, the wrong kind, or not French.

In season and fresh, they're wonderful despite the price- a pound is a LOT, enough for a luxurious dinner for 20.

Indeed a little goes a long way with truffles, albeit they do tend to deteriorate quickly (certainly the white truffle from Alba) and hence I wouldn't tend to hunt them out anywhere but close to the source.
