The Morning After

by Jenise » Fri Apr 18, 2008 2:01 pm

Okay, so you had too much wine last night, or someone talked you into a port after dinner and one glass turned into two. Or three. This morning, you wake up slightly under the weather.

There's one food for you in these situations, a food you crave or need to get your feet back on the ground. What is it?

Bacon and egg sandwich. Or sometimes, vegemite toast and a cup of tea. :)

Irish Coffee. Contains all 4 of the basic food groups: caffeine, alcohol, sugar and fat.

Grits, ham and eggs, Earl Gray tea, toast with pepper jelly. Two aspirin. Lay down another hour.

I'm pretty close to Maria, though I would prefer plain pasta, and rigatoni would be the most comforting shape though I've no idea why I say that. And if not buttered pasta, then tamales. Even canned will do.

Maybe it's just magical thinking, but if I'm close to a real Mexican eatery, the traditional menudo actually works, or other spicy Mexican breakfast dishes like huevos y chorizos. I think this may work on the principle of "that which does not kill us makes us strong."

At home, I like the simple comfort of egg dishes. A plain or cheese omelet or fluffy scrambled eggs, an English muffin and coffee.

It's funny, though, how the more I've gotten into wine as an analytical/hobby interest, the less likely I am to suffer this malady. Or maybe it's just a matter of getting <gulp> older?

Coffee. Aspirin. Shut that damn kid up.

I'm right there with you. But there is the occasional party wherein I drink more than I usually do or at a different quality level (which I find can really get to me fast) such that a third glass of wine can put me over the top. Not exactly hung over the next morning, but feeling what I call 'fragile'. This morning was one of those days--did you guess? :?

It used to be a Chick-Fil-A chicken biscuit, but I can't find one damn Chick-Fil-A in the Bay Area. So, my next choice is something Mexican-y--like a greasy breakfast burrito.

"fragile" . What a great description. I know the feeling - you have to be careful because it won't take much to make you feel really awful.
I recognize the warning signs hours before the malaise so I start pumping water and don't go to bed unless I feel like if I drink another drop af water I'll float. Makes you much less fragile in the morning so that you can enjoy some of the wonderful culinary cures already mentioned.

If things haven't gone too far, then I'm with Stuart. Coffee and a painkiller.

If things have gone too far, then ginger ale. Just. Ginger. Ale.

I forgot about THAT kind of morning after! Make mine Dr. Pepper. I presume there's something about the sugar that rebalances our systems after the dehydration issue is settled.

It's usually red or green pepper as in jalapenos or red chiles.

Traci, try Huevos rancheros con chorizo! if that doesn't fix everything, you had far, far too much to drink last night,

If you can wend your way over to Fairfield in Solano County, there's a Chick-Fil-A in the Solano Mall. That seems to be the only location in the Bay Area.

Hmm...that's tempting. I rarely ever eat fast food, but I just love Chick-Fil-A.
