Purslane

by Christina Georgina » Tue Apr 15, 2008 12:22 pm

After an article last year in the NYT I decided to try to grow purslane and since it is a cool weather germinator it went in the ground on Sunday. Supposedly a vegetable source of omega 3 fatty acids. Does anyone use this green ? Any comments ?

purchased some at a Farmer's Market on the coast in Eureka one summer. Very pretty and I used it in green salads. You can also steam, and serve with a little butter, or use in soups, stews and other veggie dishes.
If you find Purslane in the wild, you must be aware of Spurge which likes to grow near Purslane, but is poisonous, so I was told by the Farmer lady. Apparently, they look a lot alike.

Christina,

I have been foraging for several years and occasionally come across some purslane. Since it's usually not much, I will throw it in with the other salad greens, and had added it to soup, which was nice.

Don't know why I didn't check it out before I planted. The common variety is listed as one of the 7th most invasive weeds in the world ! I purchased the golden variety which is said to be less hearty. Can't find any reference to seeding itself but my less hearty arugula has been reseeding itself for 6 years - I could have a lawn of arugula

What's your address? I love the stuff. I'll bring my new vinegar.
