The little guy loses again: Landmark butcher shop to close after 46 years

by Paul B. » Sat Dec 08, 2007 3:08 pm

New provincial guidelines force Karl's Butcher shop to close after 46 years in business, serving as a landmark store in Toronto's old Polish community. My family shopped at this place even before I was born, and I have been going there pretty much all my life. I can personally attest to the quality of the products there. It's unbelievable how callously stupid governments can be ... unless of course there's a reason behind it: could it be so that the market gets concentrated in the hands of mass-market factory producers? Hmmm?

Provincial Rules End Family Business (I recommend the accompanying video report - it's a real human interest story.)

If nobody has come down with a food-borne illness over almost five decades, what is the point of applying such rules to a place like this?

I remember many years ago in Pennsylvania a similar thing happening to a farmer's shop that had the best meats. Couldn't afford stainless steel everything and had to close. Now they discover that wood has properties to destroy germs.

It's always terrible to hear about this stuff. Sorry you're losing a good butcher shop, Paul.

Very sad, Paul, an enormous loss to your family and community.

This is so sad...and I wonder what kind of business establishment is next. I don't think my kids kids will even know what a butcher shop was.
