Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam...

I'm going to be a Spam judge at a local store tomorrow morning. For my efforts, I'm getting a coupon for an expensive restaurant.

Luckily, I like Spam, particularly the 25% less sodium variety.

Spam is nothing but pork shoulder and ham. I can't fathom why people don't like it.

The restaurant I'm getting a coupon for is the Melting Pot, an expensive spot in Old Town. I also got a t-shirt that says, "Fetchez la vache," and several pins with "I fart in your general direction" and "Ni, Ni, Ni," etc. (The promotion was with the upcoming Spamalot coming to Popejoy Hall.)

The first prize winner was a beautifully packaged spam sushi, complete with ginger, wasabit, etc. But since it was made by the host grocery store, it was inelegible for a prize (but the cook received a t-shirt).

The first eligible prize winner was a sandwich made with Spam, cheese, other components I don't remember and a special sauce (like McD's).

It was fun. FWIW, back in the early 90s, I started the first Spam contest in Albuquerque. (I own a couple of trophies.) Now even the State Fair has one each year.

The parents of my best friend's husband worked for Hormel in Austin MN for 40 some odd years. Unsurprisingly, they have nothing but great things to say about Spam (and the quality of the meat used) and the company. I have yet to try it.

At least the parking is easy at The Melting Pot, Larry. Is it one of the chain of fondue places? Tim wanted to take me there one day for lunch, but it was closed.

I have a can in my pantry. It's been there for 15 years, a treasured prize from an Anchorage joint called The Fly By Night Club that makes a big joke out of it because Alaska is the second highest SPAM consuming state in the nation. First is Hawaii. At the Club, if you order a bottle of Dom, your plate of fried SPAM is free!

The most I know is that it's a fondue place. My friend says it's expensive. For two, it was about $90 for her. With a name like Melting Pot, it could very well be a chain, an expensive chain.

The Melting Pot is indeed a chain, and a very expensive one at that. The one here even has a wine list with an extremely overpriced set of mass-market wines topped by a few first growths of Bordeaux at horribly inflated prices for off vintages, or at least they did the last time I looked.

I like Spam too! I've had many fried Spam & cheese sandwiches in my life.
