Seductive dinner music

by Larry Greenly » Thu Nov 15, 2007 1:38 pm

This may have been discussed in prior years, but I can't find it.

What music would you recommend for a candlelit romantic dinner and "dessert?" Genre and specific suggestions welcome. No rap, please. Ain't no hos here.

If you can get one them soft, jazzy Bossa Nova CDs with tunes like "Girl from Ipanema" and "Desafinado" and the like ... you know something with João Gilberto, Stan Getz, Astrud Gilberto, and/or Antonio Carlos Jobim and then maybe throw in a little Andrea Bocelli, you might be able to set a mood.

Of course, you can also eat chili with beans and make your own music, too.
And now what?

No question- Dexter Gordon.

Sultry Sax Jazz - Tropico - Gato Barbieri

Sultry Piano Jazz - Concert by the Sea - Erroll Garner

Sultry Harp (really!) Jazz - Erotica - Roberto Perera

Sultry Vocal Jazz - Collection - Diane Schuur

And darn near anything by Diana Krall and Jane Monheit... not to mention Nat King Cole.

If you have/use iTunes you can sample songs for free and compile your own playlist.

Why not ask Clark Smith? Give him the menu and he'll tell you the exact pieces to play...

Me, I would go with the Johnny Hartman/Coltrane album.

In my collection, that too would be the one.

RATM. I find this to be quite nice over candle light and bubbly. Especially about 4 minutes and 30 seconds into it.

Another REALLY good one...

Anita Baker - Rapture, especially "Sweet Love" and "You Bring Me Joy"... incredible voice and emotion.

Seriously now, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman. This has got to be one of the best jazz albums ever recorded.

Oh, yeah -- also the soundtrack from The Bridges of Madison County (for all you Johnny Hartman fans). Have a listen.

We used to use the term "panty peeler" but I understand that now it's considered too sexist, so I apologize for even mentioning it.

A long time ago, I found Brahms Second Piano Concerto somehow made girls think in terms of noble adventures and beautiful emotions. Probably that tells you a lot about the girls I was hanging out with then. Probably Miles Davis Blue in Green, the whole album (CD).

But because people are mentioning random YouTube moments I can't resist, mine are mostly film associated. I =love= the first one.

Kind of Blue is the album. Blue in Green is a tune on the album.

This is what I think is the ultimate in Seductive dinner music:
Erik Satie "Gymnopedie No. 1".

Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.
