Has anyone seen Bill Buford's new book "Heat"?

by Bob Ross » Sun May 14, 2006 3:15 pm

It's had a number of pub dates, but should be a hilarious read -- the predecessor article in "The New Yorker" was wonderful.

Anthony Bourdain has released a very positive review, insights on Batali and more: "Heat reveals a dead-on understanding--rare among non-chef writers--of the pleasures of "making" food; the real human cost, the real requirements and the real adrenelin-rush-inducing pleasures of cranking out hundreds of high quality meals. One is left with a truly unique appreciation of not only what is truly good about food--but as importantly, who cooks--and why. I can't think of another book which takes such an unsparing, uncompromising and ultimately thrilling look at the quest for culinary excellence. Heat brims with fascinating observations on cooking, incredible characters, useful discourse and argument-ending arcania. I read my copy and immediately started reading it again. It's going right in between Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London and Zola's The Belly of Paris on my bookshelf."

This is the one where Buford takes a job working in one of Batali's restaurants, right? And Buford is the one who used to have that interview show on the Food Network?

Looks like a great book, Bob. I've fired off a request for a review copy to Borzoi and will read it and report quickly when they reply.

Hey, Bob! I E-mailed Random House yesterday after seeing your post - they didn't reply to my E-mail, but the book came here THIS MORNING by overnight express. Pretty good service!

Dunno ... I have a friend who's done a couple of (non-food) books for Random House. She calls 'em "Ran-DUMB House."

Y'know, it might be fun to review this book and yours in the same issue. Funny similarity of titles ...
