All Natural Peanut Butter

by RichardAtkinson » Tue Aug 14, 2007 10:35 am

All Natural Peanut Butter…no sugar, no salt, no hydrogenation, Certified organic, 100% peanuts…Just gotta be good for you. Probably is. One problem…it tastes like cr*p.

I think I’ll go back to Jif or Peter Pan…hydrogenation and all

Which brand did you try? I like the Laura Scudder's we get here. It does have salt, which may be the key missing element in the one you tried.

The other one we get is Maranatha. It's pricey, but it's the best peanut butter I've ever had.

We use Skippy Natural. It does contain some sugar, palm oil, and salt; but it tastes far better than regular stuff, including the nothing but peanuts stuff.

Well, get yourself a Cuisinart, some roasted peanuts, Kosher salt, and soy-derived lecithin and whip some up. The problem with most organic or natural peanut butters seems to be the separation of the oil from the rest of the stuff. A little "all natural" emulsifier helps.
And now what?

Agree, Gary. It's quick and easy and delicious to make up your own.

I agree. Just polished off a jar of the Maranatha myself.

I think its the salt I miss. Plus its kind of bitter. I tried adding salt, but its not working. I'll look for the Maranatha next time.

Bitter? That's probably a rancidity issue.

I always get the natural brand...sometimes Smuckers, sometimes the store brand. I think they are pretty good...the key is to get the SALTED! My Mother-in-law bought the unsalted version once and it was simply awful!! The lack of sugar still takes a little getting used to...but served on apple slices it's devine! Also, if you use it in any kind of sauce, you won't notice any difference.

Smuckers is my favorite, because of its lack of sugar, which to me has no place in a nut butter of any kind. If I want sweet on my pb sandwich, I'll open a jar of honey, or some sweet jam, but there are times that I just want the taste of peanuts with a touch of salt, and sugar just gets in the way.
