OMG, the posts about Shakey's Pizza brought back such nice memories. In the summer when our kids were little, we went water skiing every Sunday with them and they each brought a friend - most times. We ended our day about 5 pm and on our way home stopped at Shakey's for pizza, salad and coke. When it was just our family, it cost up about $7.00 for the pizza. They were delicious and such a treat for our little ones. Thanks for the memories.

He dreamed about having a place where his family and friends could get together, share some pizza and beer while listening - and often singing along – to favorite ragtime standards.

The two Shakey's franchises that I ever visited--Omaha NB and Nashua NH--both had player pianos well stocked with rolls of ragtime and honky-tonk music. Most delightful.

Paul,

Are you sure those player pianos were not at the Ground Round?

Certainly didn't mean any offence to those that might happen to like fruit salad in the form of pizza, Larry. I said that the people that conceived the idea were a bit short in the clues department, but if there are a bunch of customers that want fruity pizzas, I guess I was wrong.

Next someone will speak up and say they like the ice cream pizzas I have seen some plces perpetrate (but those aren't really pizzas, are they?)

No offense taken. And I didn't lose a wink of sleep thinking about pizza preferences. Different strokes, as they say. Pineapple and Canadian bacon or pepperoni goes well together--kinda like baked ham with pineapple rings (I also like Hawaiian-style that includes Mandarin oranges). Plus I really like green chile on pizza. I'm not fond of roast beef or barbecued chicken or similar things on pizza (and forget about anchovies), but whatever turns your crank.

NY-style thickness is my preference.

We had a Shakey's in Florida too, and we loved it. They handed out styrofoam ragtime hats to the kids, and had a viewing platform to watch the crust throwers. I remembered their pizza being really good. Alas, it's no longer there. It was truly a great family place.

Now to the poll, I like thin and even cracker-like crust. I also like thin and chewy. Not that picky as long as it's thin. Len likes thick and chewy, so if we go to a place that offers a choice (as does Fig's in MA, and the place in the desert we go for pizza) I let him choose and can still enjoy it, but if I had my way............

When I was a kid, my best friend and I used to walk to a place for Sicilian pizza--we loved it. I think it was $1.50 per slice. Actually, was it Celia who posted a photo of a Sicilian pizza recently? That looked really good(!), but it seems more like "Focaccia" than pizza to me now.

Note to Karen: I laughed when you said pizza doesn't taste the same when you eat it with a fork. I could not agree more!
Hello. My name is Carrie, and I...I....still like oaked Chardonnay. (Please don't judge.)
