I got started cooking just after graduating from college. I was watching "Joyce Chen Cooks" on public TV. The show was on how to grow your own bean sprouts, and what to do with them afterward. The growing mung bean sprouts part appealed to me as a Biology major. My mother copied down the recipe. I found some dried mung beans at a local health food store, and a week later I had a whole mess of fresh bean sprouts.

"So now what?" said my mother.

"You're going to cook them", I said.

"No--YOU'RE going to cook them", my mother replied. "You're going to be on your own in grad school, and it's high time you learned to cook."

So we made stir-fried sliced pork with bean sprouts together. It was delicious. I bought Joyce Chen's cook book soon after, and the rest is history.
