Mixed Nuts

Okay, so you open a can of mixed nuts. You know you like some nuts better than others, so you pick them out first. How do you rank the nuts? I like all the nuts, but my order of favorites is:

#1 - Pecans
#2 - Cashews
#3 - Peanuts
#4 - Filberts
#5 - Almonds
#6 - Brazil nuts

Filberts? So you got me hitting the google page and my suspicion - due to its omission by almost everyone - is right. They are what I would call hazel nuts. Or are they? Interesting facts on the filbert here.

Macadamias are gorgeous, but you'd hardly ever find them in a can of mixed nuts. Too expensive, I guess.

99% of the filberts (that's what the growers here call them) grown in the USA are grown in Oregon - most of those here in the Willamette Valley. I pass dozens of orchards just tooling around doing my daily chores.

I've been resisting joining the fun of putting down a list because I really find it difficult to rank things that I like. The correct answer is, "Whichever I had most recently," or maybe, "Whichever I'm in the mood for at the moment."

Much depends on circumstances, too, and as others have said, freshness.

Well, I'd have to go with the following:

As far as single-variety nuts go, we eat more almonds than anything else, but that's because my wife likes them on her cereal. Therefore, we always have a bag of them lying around.

On a tangential note, I just received 20 lbs of green walnuts from Mt. Lassen Farms. They'll be chopped up and thrown into vodka this weekend as part of the annual nocino-making process.

I like walnuts, but they're not in "Mixed" nuts. Nor are macadanias or pine nuts.

I have seen mac nuts in some "premium" mixes at, of all places, Walmart!

Bob, you have too much time on your hands to find all these sites. But keep it up!

I was remembering a battle years ago, Howie, involving enacting the rules for what proportion of mixed nuts have to appear in various grades of mixed nuts. Led to some prevent dense bureaucratic verbiage, and this comic relief lightened my search.

My company had a very incidental interest in the regs, but it was very interesting how complex a can of mixed nuts is.
