I looked up Frito pie, whileI've never had a dish by that name, it looks similar to things I had in my child/teen years (where casseroles abounded)

FWIW reading Manga led me to Pocky. Well, reading mangas and then visiting asian markets where the Pocky packages are right next to the cash registers. "Onegai Teacher" was where I discovered what Pocky is.

Pavlova -- I have had that many times, my mother in law was in WWII in the Pacific and Pavlova was the favorite dessert in Australia in the 1940's. So I think she made it now and then. And when we were in Cornwall with my m.i.l. visiting distant relatives, we went out to a restaurant in the country where after a nice lunch the ladies ordered Pavlova and the gents ordered Spotted Dick. Our hostess was a bit shocked that we would order such common food, but as it turned out the Pavlovas were disastrous and the Spotted Dick was perfect. The country folks know how to cook the country food.

Absolutely. There are various reasons why a food becomes a staple in a certain area. Partly, of course, it's economics (if it grows there then they've got a lot of it cheap!) but partly is also that it comes out good.

My score was 82.

Only 66 for me. I guess I'm rather boring.

I wouldn't say so, Drew. 8) Two out of three is impressive, particularly when they say 20 out of 100 is normal.

It will probably be coming your way soon: today I saw Frito Pie on Saveur magazine's Top 100 of 2011.

I have had 93. Missing fugu,Frito pie, Hostess anything, Moon pie, Pocky, Smores, and squirrel. Not a big fan of ready made brand name food. Lucky to have been able to try several - being on the Pacific rim with tons of ethnic restaurants helps a lot.

Would never knowingly repeat chitlins or phall. One totally lacked appeal and the other totally lacked any point - hot for the sake of hot is like drinking 100 point Australian wines for fun - might as well just spoon up jam.

Bill, I love it that of the seven foods you are missing, four are "easy" foods that they probably are thinking of when they say people have "probably had only 20 of these." Squirrel would probably also be easy if one were inclined in that direction.

Reminds me a little of when I put an easy "gift" question on an exam -- and my "A" students miss it because they are reading too much into it, looking for me to be tricky when I'm not.

Yeah, I generally don't go out of my way to try things I am pretty certain I won't like (but am normally willing to try things I am merely dubious about - the two I cited that I won't repeat, for instance).

My attitude is different with wine - I will go out of my way to sample a grape I haven't had before, just in case it MIGHT be interesting. Unlike foods, you can't as easily assess things without tasting, although there are some I can state that I will not like (Maple wine is one of them). There is, I suppose, a fine line between being willing to try anything and being willing to just try things you'll possibly like. I am not one to do things because someone 'dares' me to do it - totally unproductive with me (which has probably saved me from such experiences as jabanero peppers scarfed down while under the affluence of incohol). If I think I might possibly enjoy the experience, I'll go for it.

The only mistake I recall was listening to someone telling me that the phall tasted good. It doesn't - it isn't really a taste at all, it is more like liquid pain.....

So you actually had pineapple and cottage cheese on the same plate? And you ate the pineapple? :)

Always liked cottage cheese. Became familiar with pineapple when spending a lot of time in Hawaii in youth. Found it a lot more palatable once I realized you had to peel it before eating.....

Really odd list of food. From the exotic to the mundane. Weird.

Wow. Am I unadventurous or what? I counted only 7 items which I've tried from that list.

No French Toast or Chocolate Chip Cookies???
