When I had my much-smaller-but-2nd-degree burn, they gave me a little jar of silver sulfadiazine. Did the pharmacist give you that?

We learned in Anchorage, and it's been true everywhere else we've lived, that pretty much every town of any size has one staffed 24 hour pharmacy, and pharmacists know quite a bit about over-the-counter medications (as well as the power differences between those and prescription items otherwise available) so they're a good resource. They usually WILL help, especially if you look as pathetic as I did.

No, if I get what you're talking about there IS a pharmacy here that mixes custom compounds and could have done something like for me had I this been a daylight problem but at 10 p.m. I had one chain store type option and that meant all the help they could give me was going to come out of a package. So I got a spray lidocaine for an overall numbing as soon as I could bear to remove my hand from the bag of ice that was dripping all over their floor, then a superstrong lidocaine gel for the blistered areas, a strong antibiotic for when the blisters burst, and something I'd have never thought of, nonstick sterile padding. Gauze, tape, Vicodin and cats (for comfort :) ) we already had at home.

No no no, I said we already had the Vicodin at home, a leftover from one of Bob's skin cancer treatments.

Jenise,
Oh no!! Hope you have a speedy recovery. Like Jeff said, for a 2nd deg burn, Silver Sufadiazine will aid in the recovery.

and something to take your mind off the pain....

A vicar bumped into some friends in the village and they asked him how his day was going. "Not so well" he said "One of my parishioners got burned today".
"That's awful" said one of the friends, "were they badly burned?", to which he replied:
"Well they don't fuck around at the crematorium"

I'm cringing for you just from reading about it, Jenise. :( I too once grabbed a skillet handle that just came from the oven, but I let go so quickly that all I suffered was embarrassment and some scorched outer skin. Nothing like your burn, certainly! Stay safe, and heal fast.

Trust me, please. Get yourself Silver Sufadiazine. Apply it right after you get burned. Every cook should have a small jar in the kitchen. It is indispensable.

So I'm learning. Never have used this but it's on my list to purchase next time I'm near the cool local pharmacy that has everything.

Hey, we have a new way of opening a wine bottle involving a heated copper wire and an ice cold rag. Check out my post on the Penfolds 1990 Bin 90A, when I get around to posting it (must take photo first).

It's healing super fast. And you know what, two days after doing this to myself Bob and I ran into a friend at Costco. A few years ago Ken had heart surgery of some kind which required, afterward, a spot of radiation. I'm not clear on the details but it sounded like a fairly common procedure for his exact circumstance except he got a brand new radiation tech who set him for like five minutes instead of five seconds, which burned a hole through his back. He's been in unbelievable pain ever since and had lots of surgeries, one so iffy he was advised to say goodbye to wife and kids beforehand just in case. All of which I knew, but this week I learned that now his vertebrae are dissolving at a rate of about one every four to eight weeks. He's lost five so far and his medical team are at a loss about where it's going to stop and what to do about it. Anyway, he saw my hand and wanted to know what happened. "Oh just a little kitchen burn," I said. Running into Ken put that in perspective REAL fast.
