Yes, the crust seems to be everything when it comes to pies. I also prefer the tender/doughy ones to flaky. And I like somewhat thicker bottom crusts (to add a bit more depth, heaviness and support underneath the filling). While the filling is supposed to dominate, I'm not as big a fan of pies when the crusts are delicate or paper-thin, if you will. I'm probably just taking a lot of words to say I'm more of a crust fan than filling fan. :)

I especially feel this way with something like apple pie, where I often feel the apple filling is merely in the way of a delicious crust! As silly as that may sound...

I do not like sweet fruit pies.

Savoury pies are another thing, though. I do a Roquefort (or Stilton) and walnut pie that dances elegant counterpoint to a good Tawny Port, for instance.

I voted Other to recognize that undisputed king of fruit pies, the huckleberry pie, preferably cooked with freshly picked huckleberries. And, yes, the crust is of paramount importance to the success of the pie.

I make a good pumpkin pie.

Apple pie is the tricky one, I think. It's so easy to make it goopy. It's so easy to make it too sweet. It's so easy to use the wrong kind of apples or the wrong kind of crust or a thousand other flaws. But a good one is really really good.

You hit the nail on the head with the apple pie Jeff. There are only a few versions of it that I like, and I have had sooo many bad ones that I would never call it my favorite. Also apple pie must always be ala mode IMO.
Wild blueberry is my all time favorite (and we just ate a lot of it in New England) but during the month of November, pumpkin wins. I LOVE pumpkin pie. Especially the recipe on the back of the Libby's can and especially for breakfast!

Thank you to all who have voted (and are voting). It's nice to see such a balanced race for "top pie"!

Reading all these posts over the last several days has also made me very hungry! :D

It appears that the "classics" (apple, cherry, blueberry, pumpkin), as a combined group, are reflecting their long-held popularity (with most).

I'm a bit surprised that one of my three favorites, chocolate, has yet to even be slightly mentioned in any form (though I'm not really surprised to see no TOP votes for it). Perhaps I'm more alone in my love for that one? My sweetheart, bless her loving heart, made one of these for me recently. It was soooo delicious! I just love the contrast of the chewy-firm crusts against the darkness of the deep chocolate flavor. I know it's not a "standard" type of pie but I've just always loved them. Of course, chocolate is so easy to love to begin with! :)

Snake and pygmy pie? Agree about meat pies generally, but not kiddlies, of which I am not a fan.

WTF?

Both of the two top choices are missing.

#1 is clearly huckleberry, followed closely by a proper key lime. Blueberry might be as high as number 3.
