Smoked fish

by Rahsaan » Sat Feb 26, 2011 10:50 pm

We eat a fair amount of smoked fish and like to keep some in the refrigerator because it's an easy protein. Open and eat! Not to mention the fact that it's delicious.

We probably eat mackerel the most, cheaper and more nutritious than salmon. But salmon comes in second place. However, I love most smoked fish. For some reason it's just such a fun food product. I guess all the spoofy curing and such.

So, now that we've covered sturgeon, trout, and mackerel, who's up for some sable?

Spoofy curing? Spoofy fish and unspoofed wine for you!

As a matter of interest, do you guys eat herring and kippers and stuff like that (with your spouse coming from a northern European port city, I mean?)

She and her family definitely eat herring (including one intense dish - rollmops - which I have yet to appreciate) at home in Germany. But they seem less available here. Plus, since I mainly do the shopping, I haven't exactly gone out of my way to look for them!

Thanks. I never did develop an interest in herring, so I was wondering. Obviously, you're less than whelmed yourself. And I remember *shudder* rollmops from my Deutsche youth. Not fondly.

Your words suddenly brought back a memory of going to some open air fish market at the docks down in the bowels of the port of Long Beach with my father when I was a child. There were piles of smoked fish everywhere, all kinds, and we tasted a lot of samples which strangely enough I loved--because, but for canned tuna, I didn't like fish at all back then. I was an adult before I learned to appreciate hot fresh fish dishes, and I still dislike any I find 'fishy'. (That herring you and Hoke discuss--shudder!) But smoked, I pretty much love 'em all. Something I love about living here is that we can smoke a pile every summer to eat all year long.

That's dinner tonight. See John Treder's thread. :)
