Very recently, an olive oil shop opened up in downtown Frederick, Maryland. It is a beautiful shop, dark wood floors, nice moulding and a library feel. They have dozens of flavors in stainless steel canisters with small faucets/valves to draw out a little so you can sample them all. I will have to go in this next weekend to see if they have any smoked olive oil. I'll let you know.

Since it is Frederick, MD, perhaps they will have something anthrax flavored.
(I loved Frederick/Fort Detrick since everyday spent there was not a day spent in 'Nam...and they did have Hood College)

Do you mean flavors, as in rosemary, lemon, garlic etc, or do you mean many different olive oils from different sources? What I'm getting at, I guess, is that many people have never actually sampled different olive oils to experience the great and satisfying influences that, like wine, variety (of olive) and growing location (terroir) have on the final product. There are a lot of examples at both the exquisite and mundane ends of the range. Believe me, not all extra virgins are created equal.

If you have not had GREAT olive oil, than I highly reccomend that you become a customer of the Rare Wine Company in Sonoma. I have had non oil finer than the super-fresh single orchard oils that Rare Wine Company in Sonoma imports (air freighed for extra freshness!) every fall. Oh yes, it will cost you $30 for a bottle, but it will be worth it, and you'll now have a benchmark by which to judge all others which I think is pretty important in all gustatory experiences. Like wine. :)
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Well, I meant flavors as in rosemary, lemon, garlic etc, but now I need to go and ask about olive oils from different sources; I wouldn't be surprised if they did that, too. And Jenise, I will check out Rare Wine Company in Sonoma. It would be nice to have a benchmark to compare olive oils to.

One of the great charms of living in the Mediterranean Basin - that including several of the countries of the Maghreb and around to Israel, Lebanon, Greece, Turkey and eventually Italy and Spain is precisely the vast number of olive oils that are available. Flavored olive oils are not at all popular in any of those countries, people valuing each oil for its unique aromas, texture and flavors, many keeping as many as nine different oils in their home pantries, each for different preparations.

Indeed herb and spice infused oils are used but in most cases those are made at home, each family having its own favorite combinations and finding it quite simple matter to transfer a certain measure of oil to a sterile jar and infusing in that whatever suits their fancy.
