I tried dried garbanzo once and never had them again. Maybe I got a lousy batch of dried, but the canned ones are very tasty. Your picnic sounds great!

Oh, my pantry's never without canned beans either. But they are pretty much something I use just for salads--canned beans and tomatoes are the only canned foods I buy. And I confess: canned kidney beans (S & W brand preferred), rinsed but otherwise unadorned and eaten straight out of the bowl with my fingers is a favorite snack.

Well. if that isn't something...mine too, also garbanzo beans. The S & W brand is the best. There is just something very comforting about them!

It's also less sweet, and has tomato, which is how my boys like it. I wrote it up on my blog here:

Oh boy, I would just love those beans. They'd certainly be more authentic in the British style with Bangers and Mash--not that this dish as I'm going to make it will resemble what they eat in London either--but for the average American they're not Baked Beans without a fair bit of sweetener like molasses.

Now that's interesting! I was unaware that molasses had been known to kill. Fun factoid.

Jenise, Chef, I'm puzzled - I used dried beans, but they were soaked and boiled first - does that make them not true baked beans?

I've tried Howie's grandma's recipe, and it's delicious! But like Peter said, beans in tomato sauce are what my boys are used to, so that's what I make for them. Karen, the tomato doesn't seem to retard the cooking - my problem is usually to make sure I don't overcook them, undercooking is rarely a problem! :)

"C" making the baked beans from dried and cooking them from their dried stage is exactly what Chef is saying one should do. He was just railing a bit, if you get my drift. :-) And, if with tomatoes is what your family likes, then that is what they should have. I remember there used to be a cooking show on what we call "Public TV" featuring a chef named Justin Wilson. After he made a meal, he always sat at table to eat, and always poured himself a glass of wine. He often raised his glass and said, "the best kind of wine is the kind YOU like" I think this carries over to most everything in life.

Celia, you certainly made a baked bean dish. Or Baked Beans in any place except America where it is specifically the dish 'Boston Baked Beans' which means sweetened with molasses (or a substitute), that's all I meant.

Bobby, wise words as always! :)

And Jenise, you'll laugh, my eldest son has asked me to make sure we have baked beans for his breakfast every Saturday. Says it's the only thing he can eat before swimming races that doesn't make him puke! Hehe...

I really liked the sweet baked beans with molasses, but like I said, I ended up eating them all myself! :)

Ah, yes, Justin Wilson, a self described "half-bleed". He was a comedian long before he was a cook. My Cajun fraternity brothers at LSU had many of his albums. He spoke in a mixture of Cajun French/English.

Justin Wilson was a funny funny man, and AFAIK he was so without the vulgarity of so many comics. His cooking show is still the best tv cooking show I have ever seen. And yes he spoke a mix of languages, which made his stuff even funnier IMO. AND, the man could cook I Garontee.
