So here's the tally:

2 pounds of lettuce - looks great!
1 pound of spinach - ditto
1 bunch of broccoli rabe - ditto
1 bunch of radishes - gorgeous!
1 bunch of white turnips (small) - look good, but I have no idea what to do with them
1 bunch of beet greens -see above, what do I do with these?
2 quarts of strawberries - delicious!!!

Ok, so roasted turnips rock! So sweet!

The wilted spinach with garlic was better than any I have ever had before. I presume due to the freshness of the spinach.

Thursday's box included several zukes and summer squash, blueberries, two good-sized bags of almonds, hearts of cabbage, and some funky little yellow cucumbers.

Last night, we had some friends over for supper. I chopped up the various squashes and sauteed them quickly with shallots and herbs de Provence. One of our guests commented that he's usually not a fan of squash but that he loved that preparation.

Squash may get a bad name because of all the inferior examples (like most vegetables) but when it's fresh from the farm it's hard not to like (like most vegetables)!

I was very happy that squash showed up in the farmer's market yesterday for the first time this season. Last night they were roasted and went on a pizza with maitake mushrooms, tomato sauce, and basil.

The other thing I like about squash/zucchini is that it tends to be well priced, compared to some of the other summer vegetables, which admittedly are more exciting to me.

It is a good vintage for zucchini at Casa Redwinger. NJ loves it, but not something I go out of my way to eat (although her new zucchini bread recipe is a keeper). The neighbors seem to enjoy the bounty as well and I'm trying very hard to pick these veggies daily to avoid "MetLife Blimp" syndrome.

Patience, patience. In these parts, the folk wisdom is "Plant tomatoes on Derby Day, get the first fruit on the Fourth of July." We've found July 10 to 15 to be more reliable, and you guys may be a few days behind that, away from the city's "heat sink."

One happy year we got an outlier, a fat, round beefsteak around June 20, and we ate it with delight, then got no more until after the Fourth.

Yes, BLUEBERRIES. NJ and I made a quick dash to the local U-Pick this morning and stashed away another 8 lbs or so, not counting what we consumed on-premises.

Jim and I are in Maine this weekend. Folks up here say it has been a very good year for the blueberry crop.

Based on what I saw at the farm today (i picked another 5 pounds of berries in addition to my CSA share) it is a GREAT year for blueberries.

Technically not a CSA, but we're doing our part to keep it local.

From the garden this morning:
Tomatoes
Zukes
A bit of lettuce that will probably be the end of the crop until fall.
Basil out the wazoo
Dill
Sage

From farms within 2 miles of home:
Sweet corn
Fresh eggs
Peaches
Growth hormone free, antibiotic free, beef from 3D Valley Farms

Very nice haul Bill.

When I saw the tomatoes I was really hoping that I could pick some basil, but it wasn't ready.

Our fresh corn farm stand down the street opened for the season on Thursday. We had our first ears Friday.

Just spotted this thread and the speculation about making latkes from kohlrabi. Believe me, I am typing very quietly now, for I would not want the spirits of Abraham, Isaac or Jacob to know that we are even considering such a heresy. I can almost promise one and all that should you dare make kohrabi latkes the hand of Yahweh will descend upon you and do grievous harm to whatever private parts you hold most dear.

Beware. Yahweh can live with some heresies But not all!!!!!

Don't be too sure about that yet, Rogov. I just passed Balthazar's and there were Yahweh and The Buddah sitting at a table sharing a double no-fun latte and a blueberry chocolate mocha bagel.
