Crumbled bacon on that for you, sir?

That would have been too fancy for us Minnesotans. Also we were more bacon purists. We wanted the bacon cut by hand in thick slices and served on it's own. Now, I really like a spinach salad with hot bacon dressing, especially when it is made with champagne!

There is no waste as they are always in beautiful shape. As soon as I buy it, I take them out, wash the heads very well and dry them in my salad spinner. I then rinse out the clamshell, and put them back in to be ready for use. They are terrific.

Which store did you find this product ....I'm wondering if Trader Joe's might have it?

Ralph's. You have those up north don't you?

Yes, they are called Raley's and I did buy the lettuce. I won't buy it again. The lettuces are packed so tightly, they were hard to remove without some damage. Sections were starting to rot and they were very dirty. Yes, I always wash my lettuce in a large bowl, but this was a gritty dirt that could have easily been sprayed off prior to packing. The taste is no better than any other store bought, however they are pretty.

Hmm, I haven't had those problems with mine. What brand is it? I just looked. Mine is Private Selection, which I think is the Ralph's/Kroger store-brand.

The brand is Tanimura & Antle. If Private Selection packs them as tightly as this company, I can't imagine they would not start to rot, unless purchased very early before the "use by" date.

We bought this (well, a larger clamshell, but same product) at Costco in Southern California last weekend. Great product, beautiful lettuces.

Exactly what we purchased at Costco, Karen, and like I said: beautiful product. Rich, full, clean heads, and yes they were in there tight but it wasn't a problem removing them. Sure they needed to be well-rinsed, but you have to clean all soft lettuces of silt and dust anyway.

I noticed after posting that I had purchased them after the use by date. Further usage of the remaining heads surprised me because they were much cleaner. Maybe the first one just escaped the cleaning process prior to packing. The inside heart part of the lettuce was turning an ugly yellow, however on all of them.

So it was old product to begin with. I was figuring your batch had transportation issues but it could even have been both.
