Magnificent. Would be that my own mutt ancestry be half as inspiring.

I grew up in the South, and I couldn't face my parents if I had to tell the New Year passed without my having blackeyed peas and greens. This year we were going to dinner at friends, I made for lunch. I admit the peas were frozen (I added some salt pork), but the collards were fresh, cooked with goose fat and broth leftover from Christmas. Accompanied some fried shrimp wontons Betsy made, not traditional but maybe should be.

According to Wikipedia (not the last word), blackeyed peas are also considered lucky by Sephardic Jews, and that the Southern tradition started with Jewish families in Georgia.

Interesting factoid! Did Wikipedia reveal why they're referred to as peas vs. beans?

Marathon training has preempted all of my traditions this year.
