I'm in Winston-Salem. Every now and then we get to Raleigh or Charlotte for a long weekend., and we have a few faves. In Raleigh we like Fat Daddy's. It's a burger joint similar to Fuddruckers, but way better in my humble opinion. There is a Japanese place in the Crabtree Mall, (don't remember the name right off) that is very good, but we've not been to either place in some years. In Charlotte, we like Boudreaux's Louisiana Kitchen for their great cajun food, and Las Ramblas has excellent tapas, paella and a good wine list.

Probably my favorite restaurant in Winston is The Old Fourth Street Filling Station. All their food is wonderful, and I think they have the best calamari in town. Their wine list is modest, but a good selection. I believe their menu even suggests a wine pairing with each entree.

I've been meaning to try Las Ramblas in Charlotte but didn't get it worked into my last visit partly because of attending a concert one of the two nights I was there and needing to get a quick early dinner close to the concert venue. I visited Winston-Salem when Nebraska played at Wake Forest a few years ago but my favorite meal of the trip was Mosaic Restaurant in Greensboro. I'm not sure if it is still open but I was impressed by the decor, service, and food.
On your next trip to Charlotte you might want to check out M5 (South Park) for lunch--really pretty interior in a modern sleek style with warm colors, patio dining in good weather, and Mediterranean cuisine with small dishes or complete meals. Probably less busy at lunch and prices may be reduced from dinner menu (not sure about that.)
