Piling on belatedly: I second both motions. I've traveled a fair amount in France, including Paris, and have yet to be treated in a way that I'd consider rude. Parisians can be big-city standoffish. So can New Yorkers. <shrug> France is an excellent country, with friendly people and great food.

Funny, we just made Julia's recipe for Beef Wellington last night (and are having the left over brioche dough this morning).

The movie was fine as far as it went - it would have been far better IMO if they'd ditched Julie and done a whole movie with Streep as Julia.

As far as her importance or reputation in France, why should they care? It would be like a US missionary that took the word (not the culinary one) to darkest Africa. They'd deserve a rep in Africa, but not so much back home.

They have no reason to care at all, Bill; it's just that the movie was opening in Paris....

Totally agree that the Julie part didn't fare well with me--it actually lessened, not increased, my impression of Julie Powell's accomplishment based on what I saw of her blog (not a lot, actually, I didn't follow it, just read a number of entries when someone here would provide remarks and a link. And she was funnier on the blog.

Beef Wellington? Yum. Say, I was in your hood on Friday night, went to see Food Inc at the Kay Meek and had a scrumptious dinner at La Regalade. We waved from just down the road.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
