Huh?? Weren't you living in SoCal in the '70s or '80s, Jenise? I mean, even in my cloistered Bay Area upbringing I still heard a few rumblings about such matters (as in ABC's notorious "documentary" on Marin County "I Want it All Now" :P )

In the last row - holding up my hand. I was there - late 60s and 70s. Spent a lot of time in Marin County. It was all they say it was. I'm done - for now.

If it is any comfort -- when we were building our house five years ago we 'camped' for almost four months.
I cooked every meal on our gas grill (I got so that I could actually bake on it).

I actually got some great suggestions from people on this board, including things like 'use more couscous and bulger' (which I did).
No running water turned out to be the biggest hassle.

It made me appreciate my kitchen all that much more when we finally moved in (but I wish I had just a little bit more counter space)

Ruth, then you must have built during the summer. How sensible--wish I'd thought of it. :) I'm freezing my tush off. The payoff is that I'll have the new kitchen in time for summer entertaining.

Isn't counter space wonderful? I'm going to have a LOT of it, and separate counters for different tasks: a prep area vs. a plating area and, after dinner, dirty dish staging area for washup. Right now my biggest complaint has been the distance I have to go for clean water, but running water I do have. I'll remind myself to be grateful. :)

Bulgur! I love bulgur and indeed that should be very cookable in the microwave. I have yet to try rice, but you know what I did? I dropped off a huge load of old dishes that I decided to part with at Value Village the other day, then went right next door and bought a bag of rice as I had been emboldened by Celia to try microwaving it. And as I got in my car, I realized that I would now need one of the dishes that I'd just dropped off at Value Village to cook it in, not having saved anything like that when we packed. So instead I bought a little 2 qt Pyrex bowl later at the grocery store, it's souffle-dish sized with a plastic lid. Don't know how I thought I was going to get along without something like that: I've used it every day since.

But I get the next three days off: our neighbors are taking great care of us, and we got so many invitations for this weekend we had to turn several down.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
