A coffee roaster in town (M. E. Swing & Co.) suggests airtight in the fridge, not the freezer and that's what I do. He says that the freezer will dry out the beans.

Yeah, because I have given up coffee for green tea the majority of days. And when I do make coffee, I only make one French Pressed cup at a time. Don't use nearly as much as when I used to make a whole pot and then drink only one cup because I couldn't stand the taste of old coffee.

You're close to right. I drink more tea than coffee, only drinking coffee on the days when the extra caffeine hit is needed. Like today. :)

I used to do the half and half thing. Now that we use so little I don't bother but if we drank more I'd go back to it and reserve the full caff for the days when I need to be drugged awake.

On the other hand, Len exclusively drinks iced coffee and for that, I make a cold-brewed concentrate for him

Do you have one of those toddy coffee makers? I was a fan of that for years, it's probably what taught me to really like coffee.

Perhaps it's time to buy a vacuum sealer?

I've been impressed by how many people in this thread describing using one of those.

Yes, I've spoiled him. My life used to be so easy. I would just brew extra hot coffee when I made mine and put it in a container in the fridge for him. Then I discovered the toddy maker and he was hooked immediately. It wouldn't be so bad if he diluted it, but he likes it so strong that he is using it "concentrated strength" so it doesn't last very long. Seems like I'm making it every other day--and I hate dealing with the used grounds. Ugh, what a mess. I need a compost!

I worked with a judge who heated up yesterday's coffee in an old aluminum pan until it boiled and then she'd drink it black; and guess what - she's dead now. Correlation?

My wife puts the used grounds into the ground.....garden enhancer. A trick she picked up from her dad. Something about the acidity of the soil.

Yep. I add them too, as does my dad and his dad before him.

Yup, the grounds go into the compost bucket. A touch of acidity that is much needed in our limestone based dirt...ummm, I mean clay.

We already know about the inverse relationship between coffee drinking and Parkinson's.

I think this data from The Linus Pauling Institute (just a few miles down the road from me) is particularly interesting for this group here:

Liver injury resulting from chronic inflammation may result in cirrhosis. In cirrhosis, the formation of fibrotic scar tissue results in progressive deterioration of liver function and other complications, including liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) (36). The most common causes of cirrhosis in developed countries are alcohol abuse and viral hepatitis B and C infection. Coffee consumption was inversely associated with the risk of cirrhosis in several case-control studies (37-39) and with mortality from alcoholic cirrhosis in two prospective cohort studies (40, 41). An 8-year study of more than 120,000 men and women in the U.S. found that the risk of death from alcoholic cirrhosis was 22% lower per cup of coffee consumed daily (42). A 17-year study of more than 51,000 men and women in Norway found that those who consumed at least two cups of coffee daily had a risk of death from cirrhosis that was 40% lower than those who never consumed coffee (41). A recent prospective cohort study in 125,580 U.S. adults found that coffee drinking was protective against alcoholic cirrhosis but not nonalcoholic cirrhosis (43). Specifically, risk of developing alcoholic cirrhosis was 40% lower in those who drank 1-3 cups/day of coffee and 80% lower in those who drank four or more cups daily (43)

Well, at least, strong as he drinks it, it's probably (relatively) lower in caffeine, compared to say espresso, because it's a cold process. But this is all he drinks, even in the winter?

It's really low caffeine because the ratio is about 1/3 caff, 2/3 decaf. I'm not really mathematically inclined, so that may not be accurate. Plus, I mispoke before when I said it takes 8 cups of grounds. It is actually 4 cups. I use a 1/2 cup scoop eight times. Duh! Three of the 1/2 cups are caffeinated, while 5 of them are decaf.

And, yes, it's iced coffee all year round. He doesn't like hot drinks at all. Different strokes I guess.

I store my coffee, about five lbs, at a time, in quart jars in a dark, cool cabinet. I buy from Coffee Bean Direct and that is their recommendation.
I live my the following coffee maxim:
There is no such thing as strong coffee only weak people.

That's rich! I can see you turning each bean over by hand. I suppose you throw out the peaberries?

I like that! Kind of like not being thin-skinned, only having thick feelings.

Never heard of Coffee Bean Direct. Who/where are they?

Not to worry. We don't exactly live in the arctic! ;)
