Thanks, but I wouldn't bother to look at our Safeway. It's in Lynden--conservative, religious, Dutch dairy country. Only 12 miles from here but oh so far away--they even tape off the wine and beer aisles on Sunday, no joke. They won't have Quorn.

FWIW, it was available here in Butte!

Nope, not really. There are low carb whole wheat tortillas available for burritos. And somebody... Eden, maybe... has low carb beans. Rice is out, but wild rice (I know, not really rice) is ok. As long as you make your own taco/burrito seasoning, you can do a low carb burrito that's pretty darn good.

Really? That is very interesting, considering the location and Safeway. Do all the stores in that area do the same?

Oh, and I'm sure it's here in Bellingham which has a lot of vegetarians/hippie/socially-conscious shoppers. But Safeway's in Lynden, and that's a whole 'nother problem.

Butte contains exactly one vegetarian, no hippies, and no "socially conscious" shoppers. Thank god for the last. When I buy this stuff, the checkout persons will stare at me like I had a second head.

Well, Hallelujah! Not that there's wine worth buying in Lynden any other day of the week, but at least now they're realistic about the fact that if someone was determined to buy alcohol on Sundays, their law didn't dissuade such activity so much as it it sent the business to neighboring towns.

They look at me like that here when I buy raddichio. :)

Say, I want to hear more about the Cooks Illustrated version of Mexican rice.

And to Richard Atkinson: the portobello fajitas were a bit hit! Of course I had to leave out the onions, but for additional color and flavor I used orange and green bell pepper strips, and for a garnish, strips of seeded baby cucumbers that I'd sauteed in the pan with a lot of fresh garlic and salt just briefly and removed before stir frying the mushrooms and peppers. Really brightened up what is otherwise a fairly dark and dirty dish because of the mushrooms even though I removed the gills on about 75% of them. Thanks so much for the idea.
