I knew them as Archway. So another one bites the dust.
So which cookie giants are left? Nabisco? (which is really Kraft) Keebler? (which is really Kellogg's) Yikes.
Who else?

As it turns out, it's terribly complicated. If you grew up in the US, then the Mars bar is still avilable under the name Snickers Almond. If you grew up in the UK, there were two different Mars bars, so best to go read about it.

The French brand LU is in pretty much every grocery store around here.

I loved the Old Time Candy website. Now I remember eating Burnt Peanuts...OMG is that where I go all my cavities as a kid! Loved thos Chick-O- Sticks too. I had forgotten. Thanks for the memories. We kids used to go to the Rialto Theatre on Saturday mornings for 10 cents. Mom gave me enough money for candy too! What a time we had!

Karen,

Movie candy, what memories indeed. Let's see...Sugar Babies for caramel...Milk Duds for a more primitive caramel and non-meltable chocolate..Bazooka bubblegum...Jawbreakers...and finish up with a Sugar Daddy, which could double as a chisel or knife when it was 1/2 done.

I know that the world holds meager consolation in this time of sadness for you.

Would a Mallo Cup or a Zagnut Bar help at all?

Jeff

Several years in a row I did demonstrations for the Super Chef series which traveled to malls around the country. I just did the one in Memphis. The mall manager's husband worked as an executive for the Hershey plant in Memphis.

I would go work the thing with my students, do a demonstration and then participate in one of those ready-set-cook things where we had 15 minutes to make a meal out of a mystery box of ingredients.

I got thanks, a gift certificate to the mall and a giant can of Hershey products for my efforts.
Unfortunately, the produce of the "candy" shop in Memphis was not much better than the general run of cuisine in Memphis - Breath Mints, Twizzlers, Jolly Ranchers and Bubble Yum. Try to make a meal out of that.

Nary a chocolate in sight.

Apparently Mars Bars have recently got healthier.

Ever buy Junior Mints, pull the wax paper bag full of them out of the box, mash them all up, and eat them by scooping them out with your fingers?

I still like Junior Mints, but I don't mash them up any more.

Our Safeway is now out of every kind of Mother's Cookies. This is terrible. The iced circus animals (or, in a pinch, the lesser Cookie Parade) are *the* proper accompaniment to poker games. Having a good hand? Celebrate with a delicious cookie. Lady luck 'agin ya? Bite the head off a defenseless bear cookie. I'm sad.

Though the fact that Jenise does eat some kind of true junk non-food is surprisingly heartening.

Uhhh, no.

Never dropped one into a patient in surgery, either.
