Another "never". Never seen it, wouldn't do it, don't understand it.

Robin,
Summer squash is a catch-all for the kinds of squash that grow in spring and summer that are edible in raw form. Zucchini, crook neck, patty pan, etc. Winter squash are the pumpkin-types, like kabocha, butternut, buttercup, acorn, etc.

So, Robin, has Mary seen the results of this poll yet?

I never even thought of it, although if for some reason you didn't want the bright yellow color in the dish I could see an argument for it.

I told her about it, and she cut immediately to the chase: "How did you phrase the question." I told her, and she said, "Uh huh." :D

There's another way to phrase it? Does the skin offend her?

This is one of those family things where if I keep quizzing her it will start to seem a lot like nagging. ;) It's just not the way she grew up eating summer squash and not the way her mother did it, and it just doesn't seem right to her.

And 50 years of empirical evidence that no one else does isn't going to change it. Got it! I know the problem.

It's like trying to convince my wife that chicken/turkey dark meat is edible. She grew up with 2 generations (parents and grandparents) who threw out the dark meat. Her grandparents even threw out the dark meat during the depression!

That's a new on on me, David.

I've seen people that throw out edible bits of crabs, or the coral from scallops, or toss the tentacles of squid, but never heard of discarding dark meat! Was this some regional thing, or an idiosyncracy of her family?

PS - everyone knows that the dark meat is far better than that dry white stuff...oh-oh - now someone will start another poll!

If you turn the bar graph 90 degrees counterclockwise, you will see how my wife would probably respond to a discussion of this sort. Normally she's very sweet but she can be provoked.

Every person in her family considers the dark meat to be horribly strong flavored and inedible (apologies for the thread drift).

Gosh, all sorts of strange goings-on while I've been working myself into an early grave. :?

Never heard of peeling yellow summer squash. Would never have crossed my mind that people might do so, even.
