Carl, I admit to loving cauliflower, but only if it is done my way. Take a head of cauliflower, and steam it to an al dente stage. while that is happening, put a stick of butter in a skillet and brown it to a medium dark brown, but not burnt. When the cauliflower is done to the correct stage, use a fork and tear the florets into bite size pieces. Sprinkle the florets heavily with Italian seasoned bread crumbs, and then pour the browned butter over the florets. If you try this, and don't like it, then I will declare you a confirmed cauliflower hater. I could eat a really big serving of it RIGHT NOW !

After a long summer with a prolific zucchini plant in the yard, I am beginning to detest the blasted things.

I'm ignoring the poll. I like them both.
Are bananas a vegetable? They aren't animal or mineral! I can't stand bananas!!

Okay, I'll chime in with durian then. Those other things are all edible if cooked properly.

Oh, Chef! Durian is wonderful... if you get someone else to peel it for you about a half a football field away. The flesh has typical tropical flavors: a cross between a banana and a lychee nut.

I'm weird. I like all vegetables and all fruits.

Durian was the closest I've ever come to a dislike, and only because the aftertaste lasted for so long. But the fruit itself was tasty.

What do you think?

Your interpretation of my remarks is not quite correct. I said that people have most frequently told me they dislike bell peppers, not that they, as a result, like brussel sprouts any better. It's not the other way around for most people as you characterize my thoughts. I wouldn't doubt more people dislike brussel sprouts than bell peppers. But without comparing vegetables as you have, it still remains true that more people have told me they dislike bell peppers than any other vegetable.

Still, your poll is a good one.

I don't dislike either, per se, but do object to green peppers being added to "everything". Their flavor really takes over most things. IMO, they only belong in a handful of dishes, including stuffed peppers! Others? Certain pizzas, Italian sausage sandwiches, and frankly I can't think of anything else.

I love Brussels Sprouts but don't often make them. Not sure why--other than they are a little bit of a pain to prepare, and maybe they just don't seem appropriate with too many things either. :?

Oh Bob, I love it that way too. It gets such a nice nutty flavor. My Dad is big on deep fried cauliflower. It is truly delicious and addictive. He makes it way too often, but I guess at 84 he should be able to eat whatever he wants!

OKRA!? Okra is wonderful! It is one of the very few veggies that I love rather than just like. Different strokes, etc. ...

As for the original poll question, the poll is flawed. ;)

I guess I've really only had okra in soups, stews and gumbo and I don't dislike it.

But I can't see myself going to the market and buying fresh okra as a side to any meal like I would green beans or carrots or...

No, it's not that kind of a vegetable. Maybe it's also regional ... we're barely into the South here, but the farmers' markets are full of fresh okra now, and it's never better then when you can get tender small pods just picked. Trim the tips and tails, slice it, cook it fiercely in oil a black-iron skillet until it browns (this process also removes the "slime"), and then, simplest, just add in a bunch of chopped onions and garlic, chopped fresh tomatoes, salt and both red and black pepper and let 'er simmer for a while. Great side dish, or a decent vegetarian main course.

I don't mind okra, althugh it is hardly a staple up this way, but any recipe that includes the words "this process also removes the "slime" gives me pause....

All the above vegetables are fine by me but I just hate canned green peas. I have never understood why I can't eat them.

CANNED vegetables! Does anybody ever eat them? Well, tomatoes in winter, maybe; and special cases like Asian straw mushrooms or prep-heavy staples like beans or hominy in rare cases, but ... ick!

I didn't know until I was an adult that you can buy spinach in cans, and I have never been able to muster the courage to try it even for the sake of knowledge.

I buy canned kidney beans for chili and soup, baked beans (Grandma Brown's or Bushes) for something quick and garbonzos. I also buy creamed corn to make corn bread (which I like to ladel the batter on top of a skillet of chili) or add to some soups and, of course, canned tomatoes for cooking.

I remember asking my mom to get me some spinach in a can. She served it to me and I refused to believe that she got the right thing- after all, when Popeye ate it, it made crunching noises.
