If I'm up on a workday (usually 1:30 a.m.) it's regular. I grind my own and found I get more of a jolt the finer it's ground. On weekends I'll go for the unleaded stuff usually.

Cindy's usually up first. Makes a cup of green tea, different variety, for each of us. And a pot of coffee..... 2 large cups each. She has one on the way there, one after arrival at work. I drink both of mine before leaving.
Cheers!

I would tend to reserve judgment about that pride in coffee abstinence.

Dave R wrote:I love coffee but abused it to the point where I had to give it up. Morning, noon and night I drank coffee.

Before work in the morning I would drink the “good stuff” at home, but once I got to work I would drink the “bad stuff” they had there for free. It was not long before I started hanging out with the wrong crowd that would go to the local coffee shop for an espresso around 11:00AM every day. Co-workers started to give me strange looks when I would fire up the coffee maker at 4:00PM, 5:00PM and even make up excuses why I had to work late so I could get my free fix at 7:00PM.

I hit “rock bottom” one day when I ran out of coffee at home and went to work only to discover that their coffee machine was broken! After grabbing the empty coffee pot, I slumped to the ground like an animal taking a shot from a rifle and just stared into the empty pot while moaning, “coffee, coffee, coffee”. It was then that I realized coffee should not rule my life.

After one intervention and a trip to rehab, I am clean now.

Dave,

ROFLALALALAL!

My job has me working the graveyard shift, but I'm afraid to drink coffee while on duty because then I'll not be able to sleep once I get to my hotel room. Did you ever read the Dave Barry column about coffee? About how people who drink foo foo coffee should not be allowed to be in line in front of people with a genuine medical need for it? HAHAHAHA!!! I love Dave Barry and miss him a lot!

First thing in the morning, I reach for my ubiquitous bottle of water and take a healthy glug. (Over the course of the day, I will drink 3-4 liters of water.)

Then it's on over to one of the few remaining mom-and-pop cafes in the area for a double espresso with a dash of steamed milk -- I have seen this referred to as a Cortado or Noisette. Accompanying the coffee I take either a croissant or a few cocoa-cinnamon rugelach. If I can't make it to the cafe, I make stovetop espresso with a Bialetti. In the past, I would either buy an additional espresso (ristretto) or make myself a "Turkish" coffee in the mid-afternoon, but I have since given that up.

I try drink Costa Rican grown coffee since I have found that you can't make it too strong. I like a small producer in Kepos on the southwest coast. However, I just returned from a few weeks on Oahu and might have a new favorite from Waialua. It has about 30% Kona in the blend and the rest is local peaberry grown and roasted in Waialua. If anyone is interested in the producers, send me a PM and I return with the websites.

I'm a coffee person, but not very discriminating. I get one large cup from the delI few doors from my office each weekday morning. On weekends I brew about half a pot at home, drink a cup, walk the dog to my office and back, drink one more cup. I guess actually most mornings water is first thing I drink.

Re coffee- anyone read "Memoir from an Antproof Case"? I don't agree with Helprin politically, but like the novels

Yeah--there's a reason to eat or drink almost everything, isn't there? In my case, I did not like the racing-heart effect coffee's caffeine had on me once I went caffeine free. I prefer the middle ground I live in now--doesn't bother me when I have it and doesn't bother me to go without. And in fact, on the mornings I do occasionally feel sluggish or need to go into hyper mode early, coffee makes a great pick-me-up.

Re the poll results, though I would have expected coffee to outpace tea, I would have expected somewhat less of a gap than almost four to one. Indeed, tea and 'no hot drink at all' are almost even. I'm surprised!

Hot coffee with light cream and sugar, delivered to my bedside table every morning by my husband, who's been doing this for me ever since we got married. It's one of the reasons I'm keeping him.

BTW Jenise, your neighborhood stories are great.

Curse you, Robin Garr! I got up early to work.

I've now done an hour of Dennis Leary and about 30 minutes of Bill Hicks and haven't done another damn thing.

Except drink a pot of coffee.

Actually, I am from Pittsburgh, hence the Steelers avatar. Currently live in Cincinnati and it is much easier to get football tickets here than the burgh!

We were living here when the Mapplethorpe controversy was unfolding. The exhibit wasn't banned but the Contemporary Arts Center and its director were indicted. And acquitted. Not sure if the handful of photos that were considered pornographic by the law enforcement folks were removed from the exhibit or not.

Cincinnati/Hamilton County did indict and convict Larry Flynt of pornography for his Hustler magazine years before that. And to this day, there still is virtually zero adult literature or entertainment to be found in Hamilton County.
Cheers!

Yes I did, Dave. Thanks for remembering! The following were the one's I recall right off the cuff:

Jameson's - good seafood, great view of the western sky and plently of outdoor tables.
21 Degrees North, in Turtle Bay - very expensive but quality, service and wine list to match
Haleiwa Joe's - very good seafood
Haleiwa Eats Thai - the ony place we went back to twice since they had the best Thai peanut sauce I've ever had.

I'm happy to say I ate seafood for every lunch/dinner except one.
