What's Cooking (Take Two!)

Yeah, the pizza looks beautiful.

Tonight was pappardelle with a ragu from a Biba Caggiano recipe. This one doesn't involve a real long simmer (only a couple of hours) but uses chicken livers to add richness and texture to the carrot, onion, celery, beef chuck, and milk. A very satisfying accompaniment to Oscar night.

We were in a similar situation, so my wife ended up making Ants Climbing a Tree. We also roasted some broccoli to go along with it,. It all went together quickly and was quite good.

Mike, you guys got further than we did. We settled for a green salad with baked potato.

Out of commission ! The 7 year old Miele dishwasher hose sprung a leak and flooded the basement.....the KWC stainless steel faucet is at a trickle because the pre cartridge filter is clogged and nearly impossible to access for cleaning. My husband, for the first time in 30 years says "Don't you think it's a good idea to go out to eat ?"

It DID cross my mind for a millisecond seven years ago that it could be a problem if the Miele appliances needed serviced. After 2008, the high end appliance store went bust and the closest Miele authorized repair is 4 hours away. It will be a few days before we are back in action and NO, we are not going out to eat. Husband is experiencing the Zen of diswashing.

Christina! Of course one can live without a dishwasher but how in the world are you going to get it serviced? Is hubby going to have to learn a new profession?

Big pot of homemade chicken soup here. Day two of 100F fever and bronchial issues, and it's the only thing that sounds good.

My wife's away for a week, so I've been having fun making things I know she wouldn't eat if she was here.

Tonight's dinner: chicken marinated for 2 days in rose water, saffron, Syrian paprika, and ginger, stuffed with a paste of dates, saffron, more rose water, and almonds. It was steamed, then a quick browning under the broiler.

That leftover date paste in the ramekin I formed into balls, rolled in shredded coconut, then chilled into truffles. Really nice.

Tom - That looks fantastic! How could your wife not want to eat that?

Jenise - Hope you don't have what Mardi and I have had. We've been dealing with it for the last couple of weeks. I had one day of low grade fever and a lot of coughing and sinus headaches and fatigue. I'm just now to the point that I have my normal energy level back and I only sound like I have tuberculosis on an intermittent basis. It's a nasty one.

Mike, everything you said, I got. Did you just wait it out or did you go on antibiotics? I'm armed if I need to go there but I've taken way too many in my life and would probably smart to wait it out if I can--I obviously have a bit of an infection, though. That is if coughing up yellow phlegm is proof of that, as I believe it is.

I just slogged through it. I don't think I ever got into the realm of an infection, so I didn't go for any antibiotics. It was mostly in my chest for the first week, so I didn't take anything other than a nightly dose of Nyquil. Once it moved into the sinus zone, I used Sudafed and Tylenol to keep things from getting too clogged up and to cut the headache. There's still a little bit of a cough and some sinus congestion left but nothing that's too annoying.

One of my co-workers who I may have taken two sick days in the fourteen years we've worked together had this and said she hasn't felt so sick in thirty years.

I blame her trailer trash midwestern upbringing She's not a chicken fan, except on the rare occasion - and then it must be boneless, skinless, tasteless, breasts.

I know it takes all kinds, but I'm beginning to entertain the possibility that she may be an illegal alien from Mars....

Lol. Thanks. It was fun to make. Wifey is a BEEF girl (although growing up in KCMO she makes a grudging exception for pork if it's the form of BBQ). I've broadened her horizons a bit since she moved out here, but chicken is a particularly tough sell. Especially dark meat, which I don't understand.

Oh, she doesn't eat spicy either. Nor anything lemony.

In the oven now cooking are simple baked beans (BB)

For years we've had BB as an accompanient to a grilled (broiled0 chicken breast.

BB are very popular in UK*, with Heinz selling 1.5 million cans a day, but we were finding them too sweet, we switched to a new brand, Branston's reduced sugar & salt beans until I saw this recipe in the Guardian https://witness.theguardian.com/assignm ... 3e/1172251

*in UK, without meat, equivalent to USA 'vegetarian' beans
