I understand! However, my craving for hamburger and noodles is not very creative...it sure was a great dinner, very tasty and my guy loved it. What more can I ask for!

I get a similar craving sometimes. Ready for this? Ground beef and chopped onion, heavily seasoned with garlic salt and pepper browned to a crisp, tossed with Kraft Mac n. cheese. Definitely "low brow" but for some reason about once a year I need to have this. I like it with jarred apple sauce on the side. I have no idea where this came from, as my mother never made anything like this.

The apple sauce is the only strange part of that craving. :)

I was thinking the same thing, but only about the jarred part. I think the last jar of applesauce I had around was when I was feeding it to my babies. I started making apple sauce every fall when we discovered a community in the hills that does an apple fest every year and I can buy several colors. I like my apple sauce to be rosy color, so I always include lots of red apples. I put them through a food processor skin too) to chunk up prior to cooking.

The marina channel to the open bay that runs about 200 feet from my home is about to be dredged, and they'll be working at night starting last night. So at 3:30 this morning I was awake, listening to gravel and the ding ding ding of heavy equipment in motion, thinking about what I wanted for breakfast on my birthday (today). Bacon was pretty high on my list but alas, we have none in the house. Then my mind uncharacteristically moved on to sweets, like apricot pie. I actually had a few locally grown apricots in the kitchen that were a bit dry and unexciting for eating out of hand, but could, it dawned on me, make a good little galette when mixed with some blood orange marmalade. At 6:00, I got out of bed and went to work. Ooh la la, was that fantastic.

Lunch will be a crab ramen made with the dungeness crabs we caught yesterday, and for dinner we're going out.

Eggplant from the garden cooked Thai-style with red and green Anaheim peppers, ginger and garlic and Thai spice sautéed in coconut oil, with lots of fresh basil leaves wilted in at the finish.

Flounder McCole (broiled with lemon-mustard-paprika sauce), fresh ears of corn (boiled, with butter-s-p), and a sauteed veg mix (mushroom, carrot, broccoli, peas, garlic, pignoli).

Jeff, sounds delicious. And what are you serving for the post-hurricane celebration?

Oh, you think I can plan Monday now?

If the weather cooperates, I'll break out the charcoal.

Grilled tri-tip with a Santa Maria rub. Just dug red potatoes, par-boiled, then barely smashed. A drizzle of evoo, plus a little butter infused with roasted garlic and finished in the oven to brown and crisp.
Quesadilla, with grilled corn cut from the cob, shredded zucchini, jalapeño pepper chopped, lime juice, cilantro, s & p, mixed. Brown flour tortilla in a little butter, top with jack cheese then add the veggie mix. When tortilla is browned, add another tortilla on top, flip and brown. A plated of heirloom tomatoes, sliced with coarse salt.

Mary takes over the kitchen as fry cook tonight and produces these addictive, garlicky okra nuggets.

Oh, Drool!! :P
Is the garlicky part imparted with garlic granuals in the coating, or smashed garlic in the wash?

French-dip sandwiches tonight from the left over tri-tip. I put some Hatch chiles in my au jus and since my first batch of pickled peppers are ready, I'm cracking a jar and putting some on my sandwich tonight. There a lots of peppers in this house all of a sudden. I looked up the nutritional values for some of the peppers and they are loaded with good stuff. :D

Grown-up beanie-weenies: Just-picked Romano beans blanched and tossed with sliced LightLife Smart Dogs in a spicy mix of browned onions, garlic and ginger.

Whole-wheat angle hair, with pesto and pan-sauteed shrimp, a big green salad (with Maytag blue, toasted walnuts, sun-dried tomatoes, and house-made basil-mustard vinaigrette).

Jo Ann, sorry about the belated reply. Mary beheaded the okra, cut the larger pieces in half, then soaked them in an egg-milk mix for a while. Drained them and tossed them in paper bags with cornmeal, S&P. a shot of cayenne and garlic salt before frying them in shallow oil in a black iron skillet.

Tonight was quick fried padron peppers, meat loaf, mashed potatoes, and a salad. Mrs. Mike had a pretty stressful week and needed this sort of meal despite the fact that it's not really warm weather food.

No cooking as I'm still out of town (return flight delayed FOUR days because of Irene) but trying to eat every last bit of fish, seafood, and skyr that I can find in Reykjavik.

A variety of 5 pounds of tomatoes, sautéed onions, garlic, red pepper, white wine, crispy bacon went into a pasta sauce for spaghetti tonight. A salad of hearts of palm, pickled pepper slices, red onion, and pickled beets with a orange muscat vinaigrette.

You're in Reykjavik? Love that town. Good thing you like fish, that's all there is to eat if you don't eat lamb.
