I do not care for Jello, although aspic is good in appropriate places, and I'm a fiend for panna cotta, which one could, I suppose, describe as milk jello, but only if one is inane.

It's just fine when loaded up with the proper amount of vodka.

Jello shots!

Actually, I'm a 'no' on jello. Don't care for artificial flavors or the texture. I'll admit though, when hospitalized a few years ago and stuck on a clear liquid diet, I found myself strangely looking forward to that part of the meals.

My mother who was a great cook didn't like us to eat many sweets so Jell-O made with cut up banana in a little milk passed for our desert many evenings. In between we were treated to fantastic pies and cakes. Jello, don't mind it but it's not something I search for.

FWIW -- I was responding to the colonoscopy comment, but I haven't had Jello in years, and don't really miss it.

If you were a child in the 1950's, you probably ate a lot of the stuff. My mother made it pretty regularly. So I'm pretty burned out on it. In fact when I am on a "clear" diet I get by with juices. White Cranberry and White Grape are pretty nice.

Even grown-ups ate quite a bit of Jello back then. Louise is in fact rather fond of canned salmon mixed in with lemon Jello -- and solidified in a fish shaped mold. I have managed to veto that so far. Oh. stuffed olives for eyes.

My Auntie Pat used to make Knox Blox (blocks?) which was flavored Jello (usually a "red" one) beefed up with extra gelatin, so it was firm enough to be cut into squares and carried around as a snack. Great for little kids. We loved them.

Other than my grandmother's annual jello salad at thanksgiving (pretty much just like Frank's delightful little ditty describes, sans the Nilla Wafers), I completely escaped jello molded foods in my early life. Later, though, we sometimes had one at our dear friend Stella's house. Stella died a few years ago in her 80's, so her cooking was firmly rooted in the 50's. Her version was lemon jello and tomato juice, or were they canned tomatoes?, and she would embed a slice from a shallow round tube pan of a mold in a salad dressed with a slightly sweet vinaigrette. She called it "aspect". :) I would trade a lot to have her serve that to me again.

Had to say Other. Not opposed to it, to the point that I'll avoid it when it's on the plate. But neither will I particularly seek it out in any form. And since I live with a Jello-adverse woman, it tends not to be an issue in our lives.

My family ate a lot of it in my early childhood years, because it was uber-cheap.

The one and only thing that I thought jello was ever good for was, as that little kid, I could take a quasi-solid lump of jello and suck it globbily between my teeth in a thoroughly disgusting manner. Hey, I was a boy. In the most Calvin sense of the word. :D

Probably the best possible use of horse hoof there is, though---or was; I doubt that is still a major ingredient. But it might be.

I grew up a county away from the birthplace of Jell-O, LeRoy, NY. So, as you might imagine, we were subjected to it in many forms throughout childhood. (I favored "red" flavors, my siblings mainly came down on the side of green and orange.) My maternal grandmother was an especially strong advocate of the stuff, and I inherited a couple (or maybe more) of her Jell-O "cookbooks," one of which is titled "Joys of Jell-O." My Mom still makes one of Gram's recipes for holidays.

We did love Knox Blox. I used to make those for my kids when they were small, too.

Here in Texas, it is common to see several "Jell-O salads" at dish-to-pass events. I don't usually partake. :)

My Mom still makes an elaborate, layered green Jello, sour cream, pineapple concoction for every major holiday that no one touches. 30+ years ago when my sister started dating my (now) brother-in-law, he made the mistake of telling her how wonderful it was, so everytime we'd ask her why she keeps making it when no one ever eats it, she says, "Well, Marty likes it!"
It's gotten to be kind of a family joke, but she keeps on making it.

I'm going to post a couple of links to the 1970's WW recipe cards. But you should just scroll through the whole file, and read the comments (and the headers). This always just cracks me up.

There ya go. It gets ingrained in family traditions and never goes away.

Have the strength to break the cycle, Carrie. We're here for you.

I once thought of buying a plastic green Jello mould to take to parties. I figured no one would ever touch it, and you could take it home at the end of the party and recycle it!
