So what am I supposed to start pounding down to prevent this from getting REAL bad?

I would get a neti pot or similar vessel and irrigate through the nose with a saline concoction of salt, baking soda and purified water. Several times a day. (It will reach your throat.) Also, take a bunch a Vitamin C. So far that has worked for me this season when I've felt something coming on.
(Sorry for the somewhat graphic nature of my post.)

Drink lots of fluids, including water and orange juice. Slippery Elm tea is also good. It coats the throat. Then take a nap and get lots of sleep. I have had 2 such days since Christmas and so far (knock on wood) I have avoided something "REAL bad".

If you think it's going to become a cold, try the zinc lozenges. They have worked for me, I believe.

This happens to me when I sleep in an awkward position and snore through the night. Usually cured by my first cup of hot coffee. I hope it's nothing more serious.

I had a couple of days with a hint of something starting. I gargled with Listerene several times a day...have done this all my life and I swear by it. My massage therapist used to give a truffle along with some bottled water at the end of each session, she had replaced the truffle with Energen-C which has 1,000 mg of Vitamin C. I have been mixing it with warm water and sipping it every morning as I go about my chores. Take care and I hope it is just a result of what Howie mentioned. If so, you should be all right by now.

Do you have any other symptoms? A "hot dry throat" could be anything from the result of drinking too much last night to coming down with a cold or having swine flu. Have you been in contact with any sick people lately?

You are not really giving us much to work with.

I'm thinking it's a cold coming on. Started coughing a little yesterday around 6 p.m.--dry mouth type, no other symptoms. Woke up at 2 a.m. completely stuffed up, so took an Allerest just in case the problem was allergy related. Woke up with hot dry throat. Voice is tanking.
Have not been around any sick people that I know of lately. In fact, I haven't left the house since last Saturday. Only contact has been with Bob, and the cabinet contractors who were here Wednesday. I did get the H1N1 vaccine two weeks ago, so hopefully this isn't that.

Rut ro. That does not sound good. There is some good advice in this recent thread from when Mike was under the weather.

For soothing a dry throat, try a throat lozenge that contains menthol-eucalyptus.

I usually buy Cold-Eeze. (On the other hand, I don't know that zinc ever goes bad, and time is of the essence -- slurp them in the first 48 hrs or forget it -- so I say slap that elderberry antique in yer mouth, THEN go shopping.) :)

My remedy:

1 oz Bacardi silver
1/2 oz Amber rum (such as Cruzan)
1/2 oz. Lemon Hart Demerara overproof rum
1 cinnamon stick
1 large pinch Penzey's Vietnamese ground cinnamon
1 pinch ground allspice
1 pinch ground clove
1 teaspoon dark brown sugar
1/8 Tbsp butter

Place above ingredients in a coffee mug. Fill with very hot water. Stir with the cinnamon stick Grate some nutmeg over the top. Sit on the couch and watch "Cops".

(*Note that I spent a couple of weeks doing this in mid-December. You will find that there are only three basic episodes of Cops if you watch it enough. The Prostitution Sting, the Domestic Violence Call, and the Traffic Stop With The Lame Excuses As To Where The Drugs Came From.)

No Lemon Hart. Haven't unpacked the spices yet--don't know where they are, so no cinn sticks or Vietnamese. But hey, I've got Mount Gay rum, a little thingie of pumpkin pie spice, and Bob's "big-ass" TV. Surely, in such an emergency, I can make do!

Champagne!

Sorry, just trying to brighten your spirits in the event it IS a cold... Hopefully it's something that will quickly pass. The vitamin C (in multiple but preferably fresh formats) is what I try to always intake, especially during these cold and flu seasons. I don't think it always prevents things unfortunately but is the only "natural" cold fighter I'm most confident and familar with I guess. That and adequate rest perhaps...

Ah, sore throat. My old nemesis.

ASAP start sucking Cold-Eze or using one of the Zycam products. Use as directed (as in, every 4 hours and with some food in your stomach). That will help reduce both the severity and the duration of a cold, if that's what you've got. It's the only thing so far clinically proven to do so. Anything else - Benadryl, lozenges, NyQuil, Chicken-Eze, Tantric sex - may mask the symptoms, but they don't address the cause.

Here in RadioLand we go that zinc route and use either lozenges or anesthetic sprays (like Cepacol) to make the symptoms bearable until we're cured. Don't use lozenges containing menthol, though. There will be an initial cooling, but in fact the menthol is a drying agent like tannins and will have the same puckery effect. Ultimately you'll be just as sore, if not moreso. Look for non-menthol lozenges. I learned that very early on in Little Broadcaster's School.

Oh, and while it may not do much to affect an actual cure....the Tantric sex route still has a lot going for it.

Hope you feel better!

Yeah, there is that one as well. It's amazing how often cops have to deal with people who hang around in their underwear.

Yes, this would be up there alongside my champagne recommendation as well! Mixing BOTH remedies can be hot, I mean, helpful!

However, I have one question - what does tantric mean? LOL

I don't have a dictionary handy and I'm only familiar with the hot, lustful variety, for the most part. But I guess it never hurts to be informed of something new...

Got it, doc!

Drank Emergen-C immediately after being reminded about it by Karen, those I knew we had around.

Then I sipped two glasses of grape juice waiting for hubby to come home from store.

Then sucked my first Zicam (not as scary as I thought it would be), while prepping chicken, onion, celery, peppercorns, bay leaves, garlic and parsley for the pot of soup that's now on the stove.

Slippery Elm tea and rum drink are standing by.

No lozenges in sight. Bob DID buy a Zicam throat spray for coughs, though I was rather looking forward to the codeine-laced variety one can by over the counter in Canada. :)

Jeez. What else is left? ONE of them has to work!

Hey listen, with that Zicam stuff: remember, they're not meant to be "soothing" lozenges. They're zinc delivery systems. Don't just pop one every time you get a tickle in your throat. Keep to the intervals listed on the package. And don't skip doses. The "every 4 hours" line is not there just to use ink. You need to keep those internal zinc levels up for an extended period of time. And I should know: I pretend to be a doctor on some internet forums. (Ok, seriously, if the zinc/rum/C/soup combo doesn't seem to be helping after a reasonable amount of time, get to someone who's actually familiar with a stethoscope to see if heavy artillery is needed. Respiratory infections may be a fun conversation starter, but they make everything you eat taste like snot.)
