Need some! Great southern food and inspired regional fare, funky little dives...am interested in any reccos you have.

There's always The Varsity, if you need a grease fix.

I lived there for almost two years, so I can probably give you a few reccomendations.

One "must do" for lunch would be a midtown Atlanta institution called Mary Macs.
It's a definite experience. Great down-home food: Fried chicken, collard greens, cornbread, chicken fried steak, Brunswick stew, black-eyed peas...you get the idea.
Here's the webiste for more info: http://www.marymacs.com/

Robert is right, Varisity is also an Atlanta (burger) institution.
Vini Vidi Vici in midtown is good Italian (at least it was).
Bones is a really good steakhouse.
I've never been, but Canoe is supposed to be one of the best (very special) restaurants in Atlanta.

My husband and son went down to Atlanta to catch a baseball game last year and are still talking about Gladys Knight's Chicken and Waffle restaurant on Peachtree (as is everything downtown).

Do report back!

Last time I saw a count, Atlanta had at least 37 streets with Peachtree in the name.

Carrie, thanks for the reccos. I've already printed out the directions to MaryMac's--that sounds like a place I've got to visit. Probably a place it would be fun to take Bob's elderly uncle and aunt to, also.

Chicken and Waffles--I don't get the combination, I really don't. But, it was great food, Julia?

Well, I don't get the combination either, but they said it was deeeeeelicious! I googled it and found people either loved it or hated it. My husband said it was not a little diner or dive, but a rather nice restaurant. I guess if you take that midnight train to Georgia, you should check it out! 8)

I'd try it. But I should mention that I like sausage with my waffles so this combo may not be too far out there for me.

This reminds me of picking up my old boss (from the UK) from the airport. We were driving through town when he saw a sign for Popeye's fast food chicken restaurant. It said "Chicken and Biscuits." He thought chicken and "cookies" sounded really strange.

Carrie, I love chicken biscuits. Popeyes I've not had in many years, but Bojangles does a good cajun spiced one. At least in The South, a biscuit is really a biscuit, not a cookie! LOL

I have to admit, Robert, I too am a fan of Bojangles. Especially after working late, and I'm driving right by it. We usually get their "dinner" though. (Like KFC, it's 8 pieces of chicken, four biscuits, and sides.) It's easy and good.
Every once in a while our's offers pulled pork sandwiches. They are pretty good too!

Alas, Bojangles doesn't appear to be West of the Mississippi, so the only time I can partake is on infrequent visits home.

I like breakfast at the Bo (what we call Bojangles). We get the 2 sausage biscuit combo with an extra drink. Our side of choice is the Bo Rounds (potatoes). Do any of you Bo fans like the Bo'berry biscuits? The blueberries make it healthy, right?

Getting back on track with this thread, I remember eating at a place called the Atlanta Fish Market some years ago. I googled and it is still there. The food was excellent, and shrimp pot stickers stand out in my memory.

I checked out the menu and didn't see the pot stickers, but it still made me hungry!

I haven't done breakfast there. What is a bo-berry biscuit? A regular biscuit with blueberrys mixed into the dough or something more decadent?

So where do you consider "home" then Robert?

We are headed back West in a week or so. I'm actually looking forward to some healthy eating after a summer of fried chicken in NC and fried seafood in New England.

Carrie, I may live in Oklahoma now (and have spent time in Tennessee and Florida in the past) but I will always consider Chatsworth, Georgia to be 'home'. I was born there, and have direct ancestors going back to the 1850's in that county (Murray). I probably will never live there again, but it's still home in my mind.

Ahh, I see. That's interesting, Robert. And nice as well, to have such strong ties to an area. I may need to start a thread in the basement about what people consider to be "home." I'm always thrown for a loop when someone asks me where I'm from...

It's a biscuit with blueberries throughout and icing on top. Yum!

Jenise, it just occurred to me that my old colleagues from San Francisco used to go crazy for Chick-fil-A when they would come to Atlanta. It's fast food, but it is pretty darned good. (Plus, I love their corporate philosphy.) Just checked their website and see that they have one location in WA. (Bellingham). You may already have made its acquaintence.

Hey, I love Chick-fil-A, too. Got a coupon for a free sandwich. You just can't get it on Sunday! It's kinda like BBQ, all the good places are closed on Sundays!

I was in Atlanta about 7 years ago on a golf trip with a buddy who ran country clubs for 30 years. He got us set up at Kyma with a degustation dinner and it was superb. My recollection of the story combined with quick research is that there is a business in Atlanta named Buckhead Life Restaurant group whose first establishment was Pano & Paul's ... two guys with restaurant experience parlayed into more than 12 eateries now. The chef/operator of Kyma was Pano's son who, after graduating from CIA, went back to Greece to learn the old country cuisine. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal and experience.
Cheers!

I don't think this is your style, but if you want the carrnivore gluttony special, go to Fogo de Chao, one of those Argentian we'll-bring-you-all-the-meat-you-can eat-and-then-some places.
Cheers!
