With the election of Barack Obama, I guess it was only a matter of time before a mainstream white host like Martha Stewart would have a gangsta like Snoop Dogg as a guest on her show. But who would have thought it would happen so fast?

It's pretty amusing. They make mashed potatoes together:

With Snoop making nice on Martha, I'd say there's a good chance.

I know he is a bad dude (and I don't mean that in a good way), but there is something about the Snoop that I like. Can't put my finger on it.

Barack is of course a big symbol but part of what made that possible is how black people (rappers and others) have come into the mainstream American culture in recent years/decades.

I look forward to more diversification of mainstream American culture from all sorts of influences over the next few decades.

And the food should only get better because of it!!

Re a definition of music, if you don't know music when you hear it, I certainly can't help you.
Re my name sounding "rap", am hoping that was supposed to be some semblance of humor and you were smiling when you wrote it....
And of course when you read this, quite naturally the question will run through your mind, "what does this jerk know about music to make such strong statements about rap".

Thank you Stuart, FYI, toes along with crow have been off the diet, well maybe forever.
And am always delighted to learn that a composer in the 'classical' vein has such wide-ranging musical knowledge that even includes rap.
And I can, will and do argue "music" with anybody and intend to continue doing it along my merry way.

Music - Sound organized by (in) time.

That is the simplest definition of music. There are other definitions that have been argued, indeed they still are, by musicologists. These definitions extend to include the consideration of culture, consonance, dissonance, geography, gender, melodiousness, harmony, rhythm, time, socio-economics, class, race, personal taste, and, well, you get the idea. The definition can get very broad. In it's simplest form, though, music is defined as stated above. (Most of this information can be turned up with at simple web search. Most of the musicologists/theorists/composers I know and have worked with will agree with the definition I have stated above, though.)

No matter how you look at rap music, in a simple definition or a broader context, it fits ALL the critera to be defined as music. Say you don't like it, call it crap, curse it to no end, but don't say that it is not music. When you do that you are tossing around an uneducated opinion (try learning to rap or creating the sampled beats that accompany rap; it is not that easy).

There is rap that I like and rap that I don't like. There is Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Bela Fleck, etc. that I like and don't like. I have to consider everything that I hear based on it's merits. John Cage's 4'33" ? Music or not?

In 1977 James Taylor put out an album entitled "JT". There is a song on that album called "Traffic Jam"; white boy can rap. Listen a little deeper and you might find something that surprises you. The soundtrack to "Ghost Dog-Way of the Samurai" by RZA and the Wu Tang Clan is pretty powerful.

Jenise, I haven't ever put cream cheese (if that is what you mean) in mashed potatoes, but I have put buttermilk in them, and will do that every chance I get.

In the broadest sense of the defination of music as written by you, pretty much anything will "qualify" as music, from a jackhammer to a SF cable car to a food processor to a woodpecker doing its thing. You may consider that music, I don't and believe am supported in my contention by multi-millions, maybe even billions.
"Rap music" is an oxymoron. If you'd like to label it "folk poetry", I'll happily go along with you.
Sir Thomas Beecham, I hope you'll agree was one of the world's greatest conductors. Stockhausen was the "rap music" of his day, and may I requote the very well-known reply that Beecham gave when he was asked if he had ever conducted Stockhausen. "No, he said, but I once trod in some"
It appears that we have a few, maybe even several mutual musical 'oases' in this endless and divergent desert, but am afraid we'll have to agree to disagree on 'rap' and probably a few other genres of so-called music.

Provided you can actually sit though it and listen you might find that it has a beat (rhythm). It is also in the dominant key of E (relative to A major). Oh wait, what am I thinking? This can't be music because that guy is rhyming over all that. I wonder what he is saying?
