What flavors do you gravitate to?

by Karen/NoCA » Fri Nov 07, 2008 9:29 pm

It may be a phase, but I am finding that lately I am craving risottos, of all kinds. Last night, I made a wonderful risotto with butternut squash - we loved it. I also love to drizzle a bit of truffle oil or salt over the finished product. Then, I am loving and craving fish dishes with tomatoes, capers, olives, wine, lemon juice, fresh herbs, served over a grain such as Faro, Israeli couscous or wheat berries. This is not to say that I don't prepare a wide variety of food for our diet, because I do. These foods are just in the back of my mind right now and I will gravitate toward them when looking in the freezer and pantry.
So what are your "go to" flavors? Are you wanting more savory and comforting foods, or does it matter?

I think because the weather's changed to cool days with some rain, we've gone over to the late fall menu. Stuff like braised meat, pasta with hefty tomato/porcini sauce, lentil dishes. I haven't figured out this weekend's meals, but I'm sure whatever we have will be along those lines.

Does it matter? Sheesh, it's bacon - what more is needed?

I only like bacon in recipes. For example:

Bacon wrapped bacon

Bacon avec bacon

Bacon skewered with bacon

Bacon stuffed bacon

Bacon a la bacon

Bacon rubbed bacon

Bacon on a bed of bacon

I've been thinking about root vegetables and comfort food. Squash, sweet potatoes, meat loaf, potatoes, gravy.

I love bacon too, and was thinking about making sweet potato hash with bacon and onions.

You remind me of this bit of classic humor. On a more serious note, you'll likely appreciate this NYT article from today

Interesting question. As our weather has just taken a turn for the colder, I am thinking more about cooking game (rabbit, venison, quail). That's probably just for the excuse of opening red wine, though :P

Bacon! I'm thinking of the Beggin' Strips dog treat commercial.

Have you ever tried stuffing a jalapeno with cheese, wrapping it in bacon and then grilling it? Yum.

I was on an overnight business trip to Wichita, KS about 8 or 9 years back, and at the steak house in Old Town that I had been directed to for supper, I ordered the jalepeno poppers. Those puppies were stuffed with sharp cheddar and wrapped with bacon, and I was SOOOO glad I had the whole order of six to myself, they were that good! About the hottest jalepenos I've had, not those wimpy mild things that too many places serve nowadays.

Bacon and chocolate together don't do it for me.

Now, bacon toffee is a whole 'nother proposition: http://www.offthebone.net/?p=169

RE: Bacon--Our club has just started putting bacon "jerky" (little cubes) out on the course (at the comfort stations along with their bunch of usual snacks.) I hate to say it but it kinda looks like doggie treats. Last year it was homemade beef jerky. Is bacon becoming trendy and I missed the announcement?

I was starting to crave the usual roasted vegetables, and slow-cooked meats, but now we are where it is warm and I feel like it's summer again. We had the most incredible (better than we had all summer in NC) farm-stand corn on the cob last nice along with two Costco Prime NY Strips.
Hello. My name is Carrie, and I...I....still like oaked Chardonnay. (Please don't judge.)

I always gravitate to bacon and pizza :) .

Right now I am feeling the seasonal stuff...squash, pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Oh, and Cheese!! Why or why did you have to recommend Humboldt Fog, Stuart?! Had some last week, atop some petite toasts with a little fig jam...I am now a ruined woman. I will be heading out this afternoon for several more wedges to feed my addiction.
