Slow Thursday troll: What's for dinner?

by Jenise » Thu Dec 20, 2007 4:57 pm

Here: we'll start with a little smoked trout, then move onto a main dish of sausage and rye bread pudding with a hot salad of lightly sauteed cabbage, sauerkraut and mustard greens, and a bottle of reisling.

Pizza...I have a few things in the frig----mushrooms, spinach and random cheses--that need to be used up before we leave for Austin on Saturday.

I'll probably wash it down with an opened-last-night '05 Outpost Grenache.

Yea! Pizza!

You can never go wrong there. I would eat it every meal every day if I could.

I think I'll make pizza too tonight, Traci. Thanks for the idea!

Oh, like you needed someone to give you that idea... LOL

Darn, you never ask this question when I'm doing something interesting. ;)

Tonight, we're going out to a social gathering, the local Drinking Liberally group, which is having its Christmas party at an excellent brewpub. Microbrewery beer and lots of snacky pub grub! Buffalo wings, loaded potato skins, and yes, Cynthia, pretty good pizza!

It gets worse. We've got parties/dinners tomorrow and Saturday night, too. I'm actually looking forward to cooking at home Sunday and opening a nice bottle of wine.

Hey! Santa Fe has a Drinking Liberally chapter, and they're meeting next Thursday:

Of course, if you're a Stuart-style conservative, you might find the small talk horrifying ...

Jenise, I have failed miserably at pairing wine with sauerkraut. I thought reisling would be a natural match for the obvious reasons but I thought the combination to be horrid. To my palate the kraut made the wine taste very asphalt/tar like.

I just gave up and went with beer. Paulaner lager, which was great.

Did I choose a reisling in the wrong style? Or do I just not like a flavor profile that is normal? I enjoy reislings with many other dishes.

Any other suggestions for a wine match with kraut?

Thanks,
Fred

I'm going to a Bund meeting tonight. Then a quick stop by John Birch headquarters.

Pizza, maybe. Or maybe something in the gratin range... aww, screw it, I'm eating Chinese. Stir-fried whatever-is-in-the-fridge, extra spicy.

A favorite here -- soft boiled eggs and a couple of steamed vegetables -- baked apple later.

Stuart and my father actually share the same libertarian tendencies. In fact, Stuart is almost old enough to be my father, but that's another subject entirely. ;)

It's not a rigorously scientific hypothesis by any means, but it's fun ... and I map out as even more "libertarian" than "liberal," but still a far cry from Ayn Rand's version.

No Left or Right, directly Up.

They're doing shadow animals and I get to be the lampshade.

The cupboard is pretty bare tonight. It's probably going to be nasi goreng with Quorn.

Dinner here in the sunny South was shrimp burgers, sauteed baby bok choy and Ore Ida fries. Missed a party due to kitty cat issues. Tomorrow I'm taking my honey bun cake to our Cheers night. I'm afraid there'd be a mutiny if I showed up without it.

Pulled pork and chopped brisket from Albert G's, probably the best pulled pork in Tulsa. (that's not saying much, since this area is too much under the Texas brisket is king influence).

Funny, I map out as closer to Mandela than anyone else on the leader chart, and diametrically opposite of Dubya. Hmmm...

Two of the boys and the grandchildren visited a neighbor who is in a nursing home tonight, so we stopped at The Sawyer Creek Hotel afterwards and had wings. YUM!
