WTN: I'm a Prude

by Jenise » Fri Dec 11, 2020 4:41 pm

2008 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano Nebbiolo
Almost over the hill. Color's purple-brown. Initially fruit's stuck between plum and prune and there's a lot of cocoa here, but soy sauce takes over leaning more toward the latter with muddy soy sauce flavors taking over as it effectively dies in the glass on the last drop. Recent notes on CT indicate that this is an unusually poor experience, however, others should expect better. Cork was fine, and so was provenance, at least while I owned it--came from a bottle signed by the winemaker when he was on tour in Bellingham about ten years ago. Maybe it rode around in the trunk on a hot day.

That bottle was almost certainly heat damaged. The 2008s are nowhere near ready, much less dying.

Yup, 'fraid so. I've got a few other vineyards, might be pointless to save them.

Just realized the Montefico, a year ago, was similar. "Earthy with unexpected soy sauce notes, more mature than expected."

Woke up to an email this morning from Aldo Vacca. If I ever get to Barbaresco I have a lunch date.

Btw, I didn't contact him/the winery. This was wholly unsolicited by me.

Not surprising. The Produttori keeps an eye on social media and CellarTracker.

Second time this has happened to me, at least among famous names. First time, over 20 years ago, I heard from a Drouhin.

Well, I'd give up a cooked bottle for that!

Isn't it? I will revere the name forever.
