WTN: A White, a Rose, a Red....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Nov 08, 2020 7:35 pm

Had these three over the weekend w/ Susan...(short/boring):
1. Drew Chard ValentiRanch/MendoRidge (13.4%) Elk 2016: Med.dark gold color; strong melony/Chard/peachy/ripe/bit almondy/lemony light pencilly/pungent/oak slight herbal some complex very attractive nose; quite tart/tangy/slight metallic brisk/wirey fairly strong Chard/melony/peachy/lemony slight herbal bit earthy/chalky very light pencilly/oak slight mineral complex flavor; very long tart/tangy brisk/wirey/chalky/bit mineral fairly strong Chard/melony/peachy light pencilly/oak finish; quite an unusual rendition of Calif Chard; some like Arnot-Roberts but not nearly as lean/eviscerated; could be described as Chablis in style but does not have that chalky minerality; should improve for another 2-5 yrs.

2. Ampelos Y-upsilon the charged rose of Syrah SAntaYnezVlly (80% Syrah/15% Grenache/5% Riesling; 13.9%; 756 cs) Lompoc 2016: Med.cranberry color; rather spicy cranberry/watermelon slight earthy/pungent slight blackberry quite attractive nose; quite tart/tangy very spicy/cranberry/blackberry/Syrah fairly rich very attractive flavor; very long quite spicy/cinammon strong cranberry/blackberry/Syrah finish; shows some evolution but still very much alive; speaks clearly of Syrah w/ quite a lot of spiciness; quite a pretty/interesting rose. $16.00 (KK)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Absentee: This was Grayson's dinner wine he brought to share. Avram is a guy that is firmly in the natural winemaking camp. Partly made by Carbonic Maceration. Arbouriou is a grape found in the SW part of France. It was brought to Calif yrs ago and somehow came to be called EarlyBurgundy. The wine showed just a hint of the natty character, but just enough to make it interesting and give it a somewhat rustic character.
