Thanks for all the tips.
I ate at Scala and Azura in Jerusalem and Gershon in Tel Aviv, I didn't have the time to make it to Vino Socca unfortunately.
Scala completely blew me away. Nothing like I was expecting. It was rather odd because the restaurant was virtually empty. There was a table of 3 at the bar and about an hour into my meal (I sat down at 8.30) a couple turned up.
But service was excellent. Very attentive, good knowledge of food and the wine. Accommodating as well, let me try the wines by the glass before making a choice.
Loved the aioli to start, brilliant kick of garlic. Can't say I remember all that much about the bread. My foie gras lobe starter was one of the best dishes I've eaten, surpassed by the leg lamb for main course. The latter I enjoyed more with every mouthful, think it was due to depth of flavour. I should say that part of my enjoyment was because you can't get either of these ingredients in the UK so it was a novelty.
Azura was also wonderful in a totally different way. I ordered Kima with a side of mujadara (I order it whenever i can). Never had Kima before, so nothing to compare it to, but the lamb with aubergine and potato was spicy, warming (not necessary in Jerusalem's heat) and very comforting.
Gershon was a bit meh, nothing great. The starter of beef tartar was a complete let down, nothing like the theatre you get in the UK (but it isn't kosher so can't eat it). The steak was fine.
I was really bowled over by Jerusalem.
