WTN: 2005 Gilles et Jean Lafouge Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru La Chapelle Burgundy France. 13% alcohol. Chambers Street Wines, $28.99. Imported by Fruit of the Vines, New York, NY.
Medium red color, medium hue, very good aromas of fruit, black spice and hints of earth and mushrooms, very good to excellent fruit and spice flavors, agains with earth and mushroom notes, medium acidity, excellent balance, long finish. Required lots and lots of swirling, and if you're going to rob the cradle, consider decanting. Clearly will cellar very well. I plan to follow two other bottles for a few years to see how this wine develops. No EG. 4*.
Notes:
I haven't found a website for either the winemaker or the distributor but Brooklynguy visited the domaine last year, and posted a very nice report on his visit. http://brooklynguyloveswine.blogspot.com/
CSW: We think that the Lafouge 1er Cru reds are some of the best values in Burgundy. His three different vineyards curve around the slope under the Montagne de Bourdon. Clive Coates says, in his usual understated style "This is a good site for Pinot Noir." Lafouge feels that the La Chapelle has the best exposure and this wine has beautiful lush fruit with herbal and spice notes. It will benefit from decanting and will cellar well for 5 to 10 years.
There's more info on this maker at an earlier note I posted here.
