WTN: FessParker Viognier '05...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Aug 01, 2007 9:08 am

Tried this last night w/ arugula salad:
1. FessParker SBC Viognier (15.2%; http://www.FessParker.com) 2005: Med.light yellow color; lovely fragrant/floral/white peach/pure Viognier slight Riesling/Mosel valve oil somewhat spicy nose; rich/lush bit tart lovely white peach/floral/Viognier quite perfumed textured/creamy flavor; long creamy/textured white peach/pear/floral/Viognier finish; beautiful floral Viognier at a great price. $16.00

A wee BP:
1. There's only one thing I don't like about drinking the FessParker wines. Every time I drink one, the words of "Daveeee..Davey Crockett...King of the Wild Frontier" start running thru my mind and I can't extinguish them. Probably most people, any more, when they hear FessParker, think of wine. Alas...not for me so much. When I was a kid (not so long ago I must mention) was when the DavyCrockett series was a big hit. After much whining on my part, my Dad finally bought me a coonskin cap...probably the last kid at NoblePrentis GradeSchool to have one. But it was one of the cheap versions...faux coonskin fur around the sides,,,felt on top...and a short tail that attached w/ a snap. One day, at recess, someone stole my tail (I know it was Donald Rowland..but can't prove it). I was totally humiliated...you can't wear a coonskin cap w/o a tail. And my Dad wouldn't buy me a new coonskin cap...so that's how I lost my tail and the end of my DaveyCrockett days.
I really loved this Viognier. At 15.2%, I was expecting a soft/fat DollyParton Viognier. It was not. Though rich & textured, it had a good acidity & structure and this amazing creamy character. None of that terroir stuff to fuss about...just pure/clean/laser-sharp Viognier fruit.

I thought Fess Parker was Dan'l Boone?
Generational differences, I guess.

According to genealogy pursued by my great aunt, one of my ancesters hunted and trapped with Daniel Boone. I am also related to Mary Todd Lincoln (a first cousin to one of my great-great grandmothers) but I'm not sure that brings any glory to the family since she was a controversial figure at best.

I had completely forgotten that Fess Parker portrayed both Davey Crockett and Daniel Boone on television.

Turns out that my wife's family tree goes back to Daniel Boone on her mother's side. No fame or fortune came of that, however.

Tom, I have the same problem with Fess Parker wines, a reliable winery. I loved both the Davey Crockett and the Daniel Boone series. I knew lots of Crockets who claimed to be related. Given what I later learned about Mr. Crockett, I would guess they were right. (Lot's of alcohol and a propensity to argue.)

$16.00? I am getting tired checking out some of the prices we pay up here, you would be lucky to get away with $30 Cdn up here. That tempranillo I posted on yesterday ($22 Cdn) was 3 euros in Spain.

We purchased several bottles of the Fess Parker Viognier when we visited the winery two years ago. It is super lush and creamy. The best of his wines in my opinion.

Note: If you eat dinner at his B&B on Thursdays you can meet Fess and hear him sing "The Ballad of Davey Crockett" in person.

I haven't had the Fess Parker Viognier but have liked the Pinot Noir that I've tried.

Seven years ago I was evaluating wines for a Syrah tasting, and purchased a bottle of Fess Parker Santa Barbara Syrah. I had 4-6 people sampling 2-3 different wines for this event. The Fess Parker Syrah was simply awful; green and unripe fruit with a dominant taste of burnt toast. Every one of the tasters dumped their sample, and the remainder of the bottle went down the drain. I have never considered buying any Fess Parker wines since then.

I've had a few of those over the yrs as well. The FessParker wines can be a bit erratic. And I don't taste every one of them, so don't know if that's still the case or not. Given the quality of their vnyds, FP is a bit of an underperformer at times. Their Syrahs have not often thrilled me much, never found one that I'd bother to buy again. OTOH, I've had some terrific Syrahs under other labels from those same grapes.
But sometimes things change. I've liked, pretty much across the board, the Epiphany wines made by EliParker from some of those grapes. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this Viognier, probably the best FessParker wine I've ever had.

John,

Just remember that Daniel Boone was a man. A big man. He fought for America to keep all Americans free. From the coon skin cap on the top of ol' Dan... Oh, you get the picture.

Fess is an icon of my youth. I could not have been more excited about visiting his winery and lodge.

Just for the record, they have a new, talented and very enthusiastic winemaker at FP now, and the wine's quality has been ratcheted up considerably. It still may not be your style, but from a quality standpoint, it no longer is swill.

They also bottle a wine known as Frontier Red - a non vintage blend that provides terrific QPR.
If you see one, it's worth a whirl.
I'm not exactly a member of the Fess Parker fan club, but I have to say what is true - the quality of the wine has improved big time, as Tom's notes attest.
