- 2006 Lupé-Cholet Chablis Château de Viviers - France, Burgundy, Chablis (7/30/2007)
13%abv, ½ 8,33€. Light gold, young colour. The nose is very neutral with a touch of citrus and melon. There is a touch of sea shell aroma to it. The palate is light, not terribly acidic, quite fruity and ripe, very neutral. The aftertaste is surprisingly long for an otherwise so neutral a wine. Inoffensive but unexciting. 8,33€ for a half? Fair value for a full bottle, but for a half, this is a joke. Was so neutral that it worked even with some stinky, runny cheeses - perhaps not a recco for this wine - 2004 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis Grand Cru Bougros - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru (7/28/2007)
13%abv, 28,20€. Stelvin (bravo!). A light gold, young colour. A nose of white flowers, sea shells and nuts. The palate is vibrantly fruity yet has nice lemony acidity - good weight and persistence. Moderate aftertaste with some nice minerality. A charming wine: I like it. Salmon pasta: friendly pairing. - 2003 Château La Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (7/30/2007)
13,5%abv, 31,20€. Dark red. The nose shows a bit of barrique - a surprise as I didn't expect CdP to have it, but a quick google seems to confirm that it does see barrique, some of which is new. There are also more traditional CdP scents to it: a honeyed, red toned and sweet fruit, some lavender and strawberry. The palate is full bodied, sweetly fruity, soft and plump and not quite structured enough for my taste. Though not as high in alcohol as some CdP, it did show a little on the aftertaste. This doesn't show as many hot vintage characteristics as I expected. A very decent effort, but the whole just doesn't add up to my tastes. Just a quick taste: no food. - 1995 Smith Woodhouse Porto Late Bottled Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (7/28/2007)
20%, c.20€. This has become one of my favourite "cheaper" Ports - even though I often have a hard time understanding the LBV genre. The nose shows a dark fruit character with some herbal and savoury notes of earth and a pleasant, fresh lift to the nose (touch of VA?). The palate is sweet and opulent, but again has a touch of herbal savouryness to keep it from becoming cloying. The aftertaste if of moderate length. Very nice stuff! Drunk over three days. The first two was very nice, was a bit tired on the third. I really like Stilton and Port though apparently many people don't get the combination.
