How did I do?

This morning I stood in line waiting for the opening of the downtown state wine store in Salt Lake, for the monthly-or so- sale. They offer wines they are discontinuing at discounts, and I had heard some French wines were going to be half price.

I snagged:

2 Louis Latour 2002 Volnay En Chevret premier cru for $19.83 each.

2 Louis Latour 2002 Beaune Vignes Franches premier cru for $24.56 each.

1 E. Guigal 2001 Hermitage Blanc for $23.41.

So how did I do? Has anyone had these? Any reccomended food pairings or drinking windows?

haven't had any of those, but 2002 was a great year in Cote de Beaune, and I might have armwrestled you for the Burgs (especially the Volnay) at that price if I had been there. Don't know that I ever saw an under$20 Volnay 1er from 2002.

Volnay is usually a smooth-drinking Burgundy (more "feminine" in style than some). It might pair well with veal and mushrooms, coq au vin, Cornish hen with cranberry relish, etc. Also some hard cheeses but it might take a little experimenting to find the right cheese pairing. It's tricky to judge the drinking window. Some red Burgundies from 2002 are drinking well now. Others may be closed up. I'd be tempted to give them a try before 2008.

Great price on the Volnay. I don't have any of the '02 Latour Volnay, but I have a half case of the '02 d' Angerville Clos des Ducs that I plan to hold for a few years yet.

Volnay is exceptionally good with Beaufort. Unfortunately for me, the pairing is very expensive (unless you can buy your Volnay in Utah), so I can only match the two on rare occasions.
