Napa Cellars 2004 Zinafandel: I am reminded that I'm overdue for a nose hair when they curl as I sniff this wine. Even though the shop owner knows my tastes, I should have checked the label. Yup, 15.5% ABV. I take a cautious sip. Hmm, not as hot as one would expect, but the alcohol is noticeable as an unsugarry sweetness in the bramble and plummy fruit. I can see why it's popular, but it's not for me.
Second night - a little better, but it's still not right. Don't buy again
Tolosa 2005 Central Coast Pinot Noir: Cool in that it's from the Central Coast region that is. Floral notes mix with muted, typical CA Pinot aromas. The scents carry over in the initial tastes, which give way to spices and red berry fruit with just a hint of tomato skin. A nicely made Pinot, the maker calls it feminine and I would have to agree. I would like to see the alcohol closer to 13% (it's at 14.2 per the label), but it's still quite enjoyable. I'll probably buy again.
