1995 Chateau La Louviere, Louviere Blanc
Muted grapefruit on the nose. Slate, hay, and citrus in the mouth. Overall somewhat flat. Kept waiting for it to wake up in the glass. We probably should have served it three, or four years ago.
1999 Vieux Mes des Papes CdP
Decanted for two hours before serving. Excellent nose of coffee, earth and tar. Interesting and complex tastes with lots of coffee, chocolate and a hint of tar/asphalt initially. Over the half hour in the glass it started to take on a distinct cherry note. The extra long velvety finish made it different from other CdP's that I have tasted. The wine went particularly well with the truffle cheese that we served.
2001 Muscat de Beaune de Venise (375 ml)
This was my first experience with this wine. Nose of honey and carmel. Taste was carmel corn in a glass. Others noticed honey and violets. Not me! Carmel corn was all that I got out of it. Not necessarily a bad dessert wine, just not complex, or particularly interesting. I much prefer Sauterenes, or Port.
We served all of the wines with bread, cheeses matched to the wines, and shrimp cocktail. I'm finding that I much prefer that approach to "sit down" wine dinners. It creates a more casual atmosphere and allows the wines to be the focus.
